Inspiron 5680 PSU Upgrade Case Modification Query

Hi all,

I have a good quality spare 700W PSU which I've been wanting to swap for the Dell 460W inside an Inspiron 5680, but because of the PSU design it would require a modification to the plastic rear of the case.

Having read the Inspiron 5680 PDF manual I see you can remove the plastic rear covering (although front and bottom covering need to come off first to do this the manual says), does anyone know if this is a possible solution please to help fit the new PSU?

In order to save having to make a permanent modification to the plastic rear covering? As my plan is to install the new PSU, then replace the plastic top and bottom covers but leave the plastic rear cover off afterwards.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Do you need that extra wattage?

The original PSU is supposed to be standard ATX. So if the replacement is also ATX...

Read this and this about replacement PSUs for the Inspiron 5680.

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your reply and the links to the forums posts.

I have an original Dell supplied RTX 2060 inside the Inspiron 5680, but the RTX 2060 keeps (I guess for a better word) shutting down when playing certain games. No blue screen or anything, just the video signal to the monitor is dropped. Upon restarting the computer all is okay again, it only seems to happen on the most demanding of games and I'm wondering if it's a possibility that the Dell supplied PSU is struggling to power the RTX 2060 at full load. I've also checked the RTX 2060 temp just in case it was a problem but when running at full load it's staying at 80C.

Unfortunately the 700W PSU I have has a switch to the right where the power cord plugs in, which would require me to modify the part of the plastic covered by the red block in the picture below. So I was thinking to take off the entire plastic back panel in blue and leave it off, to save modifying the case.

I'm assuming this might be a possibility as it's mentioned in the manual that it can be removed, but wasn't sure if the missing plastic back panel would cause any difficulties.

Again thank you in advance for any further help.

This model uses standard power supply.

HOWEVER power supplies are not a single rail and single spec of Watts.

EVGA 700BR meets Dell Spec

Smaller units even from EVGA do not.

Some Vendors even with their 1000W units have 90 to 130W max on the 3.3v/5v rails.

Removing the rear plastic is not necessary to remove the PSU.

You may need to make room for a switch however which might mean modding the rear and plastic somewhat.
