Hello DELL-SAM L,

i perform all what you said, the tape drive and the medium changer appear in the OS, Backup Exec is seeing the Library, but is not able to achieve any task! It does not have informations on the Tape cadridge Except the total size.

1. i have got the following warning when installing Backup Exec 2012 (But the Library is ready):

Tape Library Information

One or many devices have been connected or are busy (the original message is in french)

2. I have noticed that the firmware recommended by symantec in the Hardware Compatibility List are not up to date. Do you think using the last Dell Firmware could cause this issue?

Hello K_fortune,

What you need to do is in the devices tab of backup exec you need to run an inventory so that backup exec will be able to see all the media and do a quick format on the tapes so that they can be used for backups. Once the inventory is completed then you should be able to run a test job & it should be able to complete.

Also if you are not at the latest version of firmware for the TL2000 then I would upgrade it as well so that you are at the latest version. After the firmware upgrade I would also make sure that your backup exec is updated as well to the latest updates for backup.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello K_fortune,

Here is what you will need to do to get the server & backup exec to see the TL2000.

  1. Connect the TL2000 to the server.
  2. Power on the TL2000 & wait about 5 minutes or until the unit states that it is ready on the front panel.
  3. Once the TL2000 is at an idle or ready state then power on the server.
  4. Once the server boots into windows then you will need to install the drivers. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=MNFYH&fileId=3332845538&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=powervault-tl2000&languageCode=EN&categoryId=TA
  5. The driver folder under windows 2008x64_R2 you will need to run the file called install_nonexclusive.exe
  6. Once the drivers finish installing then you will need to reboot the server.
  7. Once the sever has rebooted then you will need to confirm in device manger that you can see both the Medium changer and the tape drive.
  8. Once both the medium changer and tape drive are seen in device manger then you will need to go into backup exec & run the tape install wizard so that BUE can see & use the TL2000.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you Dell-SAM L,

1. Please tell me what about the Microsoft iSCSI initiator in windows server and the SAS-iSCSI bridge?

2. At which step those elements are supposed to be configured and in which way?

The thing is that i wanted to know the right procedure before starting troubleshouting an issue:

We have a powerdege M620 in a M1000e which is connected to a Tl2000 (in a SAN) without being able to realise any job through Symantec Backup Exec 2012.

I am thinking about the firmwire which have been update before the first installation and which do not match with those specified in symantec Hardware Compatibility List...does it matter?

Thanks

Okay, i think i am already true with the Microsoft  iscsi initiator and the SAS-iSCSI bridge: the first allow the OS to comunicate with Iscsi device et the second allow comunication between the drive with SAS interfaces and an iSCSI SAN. Then with the procedure you gave me it's going to be:

1. configure the SAS - iSCSI bridge on the tape library

2. Configure the Microsoft Iscsi Initiator on the server

and then, All what you said.

Now as far my issue is concerned, do you think that what i was talking about concerning firmwares update could be the problem?

Hello K_fortune,

Yes you are correct in that you will need to configure the iSCSI bridge first and then you can do MS iSCSI initiator & then when that is done you should be able to see the TL2000 in the OS & will need to follow the steps that I listed earlier.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
