Compellent SC2080 - Direct Front End FC connection

We recently bought an SC2080 Compellent and while we are waiting on our FC Switches we are trying to connect the compellent directly to an Emulex LP120002 HBA adapter (on an R330 with windows 2012 R2 with MPIO enabled), in the enterprise manager we can add our server and enterprise manager sees that the FC connections are up , as soon as we add the server connectivity goes down. is this because of the fact that an FC Switch is mandatory or is it supposed to work (although not supported) ?

Hello,

I'm not yet an expert on CML.  However, this question comes up quite often on the internal discussions.  Every time the answer has been, you must have a FC switch.  Direct attached Fibre Channel is not supported.  Never, "it works but not supported".   There is a CML model that has SAS direct attach support.  SAS only.

Without a switch I would suspect it goes to FCAL mode.  That's my suspicion anyway.

My suggestion, is open a case, make sure phone home is all set, great time to upgrade to most current SCOS, until the switches arrive.

 Regards,

Don

We have got a brocade 300 from our reseller to test it and with this switch it works, i think it's because of the fact that you have to "zone" the Physical WWN's with the Virtual WWN's of the Compellent SAN on the SCv2080 line.

Hello,

Correct.  Now you are part of a Fibre Channel Fabric as opposed to a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop.

Glad to know that you have it working!

 Regards,

Don
