Disruptive technology trends such as Cloud, Social, Mobile, and Big Data are redefining the way we work and live and are also revolutionizing the application landscape. For example, every mobile application we touch, whether for personal or business reasons, regardless of device, is connected to a cloud somewhere. It’s creating massive data growth, which in turn presents EMC and our customers with enormous opportunity.

Companies who redefine themselves as software-defined enterprises and are successful in their adoption of the 3rd Platform will emerge as market leaders. Software-defined enterprises will leverage software to build new applications that harness new sources of data to redefine their strategy and drive structural change to their advantage.

No two companies are alike and all are at different points along their journey. They all have different priorities, different IT environments, and come in all different sizes- catering to their respective customer bases. But at the same time, they have a lot in common. All are looking to control unrelenting data growth while managing costs and looking at ways to combine best-in breed technology to drive business success, profitability, and shareholder value. It’s a complex problem to solve. Where do you start? How do you redefine?

EMC provides a unique approach that combines the right technology, people, and process to help customers redefine their business and bridge the gap between 2nd and 3rd Platforms. EMC meets the customer wherever they are today, and is poised to help them get to wherever their business needs to be tomorrow.  This approach was unveiled at EMC World with the announcement of Project Nile, ScaleIO, and EMC ViPR 2.0.  This discussion will help you get started on your journey and give you direct access to ask the experts.

Good Morning Experts!

Can you share an overview of the key takeaways people should know about EMC ECS Appliance, ViPR, and ScaleIO that were announced during EMC World 2014?

Thanks!

ECS Appliance is a platform in a box powered by the ViPR software.  Key takeaways for ECS appliance are:

  • Utilize commodity hardware components
  • Lower TCO than public cloud
  • Serviceability of individual disks and nodes without impacting the storage engine
  • Ability to have limitless scale out

ECS appliance comes in different flavors.  It can be used to serve both dense throughput optimized workload for Object / HDFS and IOPS optimized Block workload through ScaleIO.

Northbound APIs remain the same for Object/HDFS/Block over ECS Appliance.  As a result, developers are agnostic of the underlying Hardware.

thanks,

Kamal

ScaleIO is the next storage solution. It is a software only solution which aggregates all local storage in your existing application servers to deliver an enterprise grade SAN storage.

The main four characteristics of ScaleIO are:

  • Convergence - installed on existing application servers or brand new one (like ECS)
  • Scalability - Scales on-the-fly to thousands of servers (was demoed). Servers can be added, moved and removed on the fly which allows (among many other things) to replace the entire hardware while the system is running with no downtime
  • Elasticity - in oh so many ways - different servers, in the same cluster, supports different OSs, can mix different OSs in the same cluster, different storage devices (HDD, SSD, Flash PCIe) and more ...
  • Performance - all servers participate in the IO workload generating massive parallel performance (both IOPS and bandwidth). Adding servers increases the performance linearly so when more application are added the performance does not degrade.

Overall, the big thing that stood out for me at EMC World was the focus on software. EMC is already the 6th largest software company in the world, yet most people think of EMC as a hardware company. But the big news and vision was all about software. Even beyond ViPR, we heard about ScaleIO, a software version of VNX (Project Liberty), a software version of Isilon OneFS and more. And even though the big news from ASD was the ECS appliance, as Jeremy Burton put it, the ECS appliance is a commodity hardware platform differentiated by the ViPR software.

Of course EMC will continue innovation in hardware. There are still so many workloads that require innovative and integrated software & hardware platforms. but what I took away from EMC World and EMC's broader strategy is that customers are being given choice and flexibility. Customers can choose which storage and data services should execute at the array level and which can be delivered and consumed as software-defined services independent of hardware. And it can all be managed with a single management interface and integrated with existing cloud and data center orchestration and management stacks.

It's an exciting time to work at EMC.

There is a great interview that was done with Amitabh Srivastava after his keynote that sums up the last 365 days with ViPR 2.0, ScaleIO, EMC ECS Appliance, and the other software-defined storage announcements made at world.  This will give a great perspective directly from the Advanced Software Division President at EMC.    http://emcworld.com/emctv.htm?id=3543878259001

Key takeaways from EMC World 2014 from a ScaleIO perspective were...

1. It's a great time to consider EMC for your hyper-converged software defined storage architecture needs.

2. EMC ScaleIO provides a flexible, elastic and high performance software defined storage architecture appropriate for 2nd and 3rd platform workloads, with a lot of customer choice.

3. We announced ScaleIO's new software capabilities, ViPR 2.0 integration (ScaleIO powers the ViPR Block data service ), the EMC ECS Appliance, VSPEX reference architectures and shared some great customer stories.

Check out our pulse post for more details:  http://pulseblog.emc.com/2014/05/05/emc-scaleio-delivers-elastic-scalable-high-performance-software-defined-block-storag…
