Problem with Studio XPS 8100 - 6 beeps PLEASE HELP!

Hello, hopefully I am on the right forum. If not then could someone please re-direct me to the correct one?

Right, basically my desktop has the 6 beeps whenever I start it. I've had this problem for a year and a half now, with it regulary happening randomly. I've called up Dell 3 to 4 times and didn't receive any help due to the poor communication from the person on the other side of the phone. Basically all I was told was to remove the two RAM cards and place them in different slots, or when the desktop is off, to hold down the power button for 20 seconds and then turn it on (this apparently gets rid of static, I was told?). This worked at first, and I hoped it had fixed the problem. But a week later the 6 beeps came back. So basically I had to do one of those two fixes which I was told to keep getting my computer to work.

Now this doesn't even fix the 6 beep problem. I have no idea what is causing this, and I am scared to turn on my computer incase it comes back (which evidently it did, this morning). I had a technician come round last year who replaced the graphics card (which is a nVidia gforce of some type) but this didn't fix anything. I've looked around the internet and can't really find other answers. Some people have said its the graphics/video card, others say it's the motherboard, and some say it's something to do with the power supply and it not having enough pins or watt outtage? to power the graphics card. I'm no whiz at computers so i have no idea what everything is inside the desktop or what to do, or what all the terms/hardware are.

Please could someone help me. I've literally had this problem since I bought this computer, and had to buy a laptop as a replacement. I'm about to start another year at uni and could really do with my computer fixed. Unfortunately my warranty has expired, but I spent over £1000 on this desktop and to not having it working (from the beginning) is simply not acceptable.

Thankyou to anyone who reads this and I hope to hear an answer soon.

Perry J,

Since the Studio XPS 8100 is out of warranty, we cannot send out any parts or service.

6 beeps = Video BIOS Test Failure Video card failure
* Power off
* open the case cover
* Disconnect the power supply leads from the video card
* Remove and reseat the video card in the motherboard slot
* Be sure to reconnect the power supply leads to the video card
* Close the cover
* Power the system on

If you still get the 6 beeps, consider replacing the video card.

Hello, thankyou for answering.

I tried exactly as you said, removing the graphics card and then connecting it again, but there are still 6 beeps.

Although, incase this helps at all, when I switched my 2 ram cards (I have 2 4gb ram cards and there is 4 possible slots for the ram) to the other 2 slots and turned on the computer, I got 2 slightly longer beeps instead. What does this mean? So the 2 ram cards were in 2 slots with cream latches to hold them in place, but when i moved them both to the slots with the black catches, I got the 2 beeps. Does this mean anything?

Hi Perry J,

If you have only two memory modules, they should be in slots one and two, the white ones.

Your video card has failed and you need to replace it. The most straightforward replacement would be to get the same one that came with the system originally.

Good luck!
