How to boot from the external usb driver

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 2720 computer with windows 8.1 and I have made the Dell bootable recovery usb disk. But I am always worried on how to use this driver, in case of disaster. I also couldn't find any literature on Dell documents for this very basic and important question. Therefore, I shall be grateful if a knowledgeable person could show me how to use my external recovery driver in case of disaster.

Best regards

Hi Shams Malek,

You did a good job creating a backup. You can follow this link, use the bootable usb disk and reinstall the software.

Hi my friend,

I tried it, but it didn't work. The system doesn't detect my external hard disk attached to usb. Through the Dell Backup & Recovery, I have both the Bootable Backup in one drive and System & Data backup in separate drive, but both in one usb hard disk.

Dear friend,

Perhaps I wasn't too clear. I said in case of disaster!!! ie, in case that I could not boot into windows.

Dear Shrikanth G

As I said , I have the recovery and boot back up drives in my external hard disk. The problem is how to get the computer to detect my usb connected hard disk.

Shams

Hi Shams Malek,

You need to shut down the system and connect your external usb drive. Turn on the system and tap F12 it will show up the boot options with your usb drive listed there.

Hi Shams Malek,

Please go to bios by tapping F2 at startup. Make sure usb emulation is enabled. During no boot scenarios i would suggest you to use a flash drive or dvd disks for creating a recovery media.

1 Change the BIOS boot order so the USB device option is listed first. The BIOS is rarely setup this way by default.

2 Attach the USB device to your computer via any available USB port.

3 Restart your computer.

4 Watch for a Press any key to boot from external device... message.

5 Your computer should now boot from the flash drive or USB based external hard drive.
