CPU Upgrade Options for Inspiron 580

How do you determine what processors are supported by the A07 BIOS on a DELL OC2JKT motherboard? I'm contemplating putting in an i7-880 processor in the LGA1156 socket in place of the i5-650 currently on board? The H57 chipset should be compatible with either processor.

The Dell OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Intel H57 chipset only supports the i3 and i5 CPUs.

Dell is not obligated to update bios to accomodate Intel® Core™ i7-800 processor series.

Intel says they support i7-8xx, i5, and i3 processors (www.intel.com/.../h57-overview.htm) with the H57 chipset as those processors all have an LGA1156 socket format. That being said, it shoulb become an issue of whether or not the BIOS on the motherboard is compatible with the i7-8xx processors. This same situation arose a number of years ago on I upgraded a Pentium 4 based motherboard processor on a Sony VAIO PC. As soon as the BIOS "knew" that there were faster processors (with the same socket) and a larger L2 cache, then the POST processed properly and the system booted just fine. Maybe a better question is: does DELL upgrade their motherboard BIOS versions so they stay current with new processors in the same "socket family" like the rest of the motherboard manufacturers?

That is what I was wondering. As this is my first DELL PC, I was hoping that new versions of BIOS were developed as processor families in a given socket format grew. But, as you said, there is no obligation to do so. Maybe the next question is to find out if the A07 BIOS firmware for the OC2JKT motherboard supports an i5-760 processor to go from a 2 core i5-650 to a 4 core i5-760? It would be good for DELL to have a listing of BIOS versions that support which processors on which motherboards.

The Intel Core i5 760 (2.8GHz/8MB cache) is supported by the Inspiron 580.

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS version A06, or higher installed, when Enhance CPU support was added.

If the factory motherboard will support the Core i7, you can simply swap one in. Otherwise, you'll have to change the motherboard (standard micro-ATX) as well. If you were to swap out the motherboard, you would be expected to buy a new Windows license, as the Microsoft OEM license only permits changing the motherboard for reasons of repair.

This system is designed for 3.5" drives - there won't be any OEM parts for mounting a 2.5" drive.  There are plenty of other options from third party suppliers - and since the drive doesn't show on the outside of the system, you won't even see the bracket once it's mounted.

Paul,

Assuming that you have the Inspiron 580 MT and not the 580s Slimline version.

As already stated, there are no OEM parts available to install a 2.5" SSD in the Inspiron 580 MT.

The ICY DOCK EZ-Fit Lite MB290SP-B 2 x 2.5” to 3.5” Drive Bay SATA/IDE SSD/HDD Mounting Kit / Bracket / Adapter, will allow you to install up to two SSD's in the Inspiron 580 MT :-

Bev thank you for a quick response  to my question. Yes I do have the Dell Inspiron 580 Mid Tower.

I also have the Dell Precision T5500. Originally with two 3.5" SATA drives. I call Dell and was told that Dell do not make the 2.5 to 3.5 adapter for it but I can try a Dell 0R494D R494D Caddy Tray 2.5"  to 3.5" Adapter for my Precision T5500.  Is any Dell OEM will fit the Dell Inspiron 580 Mid Tower? Thank you Bev. Paul.

No, as already noted, there is no Dell OEM part to install an 2.5" SSD in the Inspiron 580 MT.

You should have no issues using the Icy Dock  Drive Bay SATA/IDE SSD/HDD Mounting Kit / Bracket / Adapter, I already posted the link too.
