CAPS key doesn't work(Its not the keyboard)

I have a dell keyboard that shows the caps locking working when the computer is just starting to boot. Once it gets to the windows screen the caps led light stops working and i cant not switch the Caps on and off anymore. i tried a different keyboard on the computer and it has the same issue. i updated the latest BIOS, chip set, keyboard, usb drivers, did last know configuration. Also when i press the caps on the on screen keyboard the caps light comes on but i can only then switch it off using the on screen keyboard. So we know the keyboard caps button itself is not the problem. Any ideas?

Always include the PC model and version of Windows in your posts!  :emotion-43:

If this is a USB keyboard, have you tried a different USB port on the rear of the tower?

The machine is an Optiplex 380 and yes i tried the usb on the front and the back. Any other ideas

The caps button works when i press it from the on screen keyboard but if i wanted to shut it off the keyboard wont allow me to do so. i know its not the keyboard becasue i tried other keyboards on the machine and its the same issue and i tried the original keyboard that didn't work and tried it in a different machine and it works fine. Its def not the keyboard.

Hi Pombano,

Try the "on-screen keyboard" to enable caps lock. Then see if your keyboard light turns on.

Since it works during the boot, before Windows loads, I suspect this is a software issue.

You still didn't say what version of Windows you have, but you might want to try running sfc /scannow from Start>Run. 

If that doesn't help, try a Repair Reinstall.

Either way you need a CD/DVD with exactly the same version and Service Pack of Windows as is installed on the hard drive.

What did you run? sfc, Repair/Reinstall, both?

just did the sfc /scannow, it found no errors

i went to command prompt and ran sfc /scannow as admin. it said scanning for verification then it said it did not find any errors.

How did you run sfc without the Windows disk?

How do you know sfc found no errors? sfc doesn't give an (obvious) report on what it did or didn't do. If it's not happy, it will just abort without doing anything and without any warning messages.

If you're in the US, you can request the Windows CD here. Dell may charge you for it.

It might be worth looking at the Keyboard Settings in Control Panel and in Programs. Some keyboard software allows you to lock or disable the Caps Lock. I found that setting for a Logitech wireless KB using Setpoint..
