DD2500 Chassis Replacement

Hi,

Our chassis failed (not entirely sure of the reason yet) and our MSP tried a few different component swaps with no luck. So they ended up swapping the entire chassis, and ported all the disks from the old one. This has left it in a bit of limbo; it powers on and appears to at least POST/boot OK but connecting to the console port I'm presented with a simple menu, that required no auth to get to!

1. Show System Information
2. Show Head Information
3. Show Head Swap Menu
4. Go to Rescue Menu
5. Reboot

At the top of this menu though is the following message:

System Misconfigured [Console=ttyS0]
Storage "Last Attached Serialno" does not match system serial number.

The MSP seem a little out of their depth with DD specifically; they are saying the port used for management (not the spanner icon one) is not responding to requests to access it, or even a ping, but they don't know how to get to the actual config. to check/change the IP address. They are also apparently struggling to get engagement from Dell directly.

I'm not expecting a comprehensive answer that explains the whole fix process. More a pointer that I can pass to the MSP, especially in the complete chassis swap method they did.

Thanks so much

That seems to be the upside down approach? As that is what the MSP is supposed to be about, offering you support wrg to supporting the DD hardware?

There is a fairly old 2014 doc "EMC Data Domain DD2200 and DD2500 Systems Chassis Replacement" https://dl.dell.com/content/docu51450_data-domain-dd2200-and-dd2500-systems-chassis-replacement.pdf?language=en-us specifically stating "Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.". Doesn't seem tot be the case here though?

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000042379?lang=en "Data Domain - Head Swap and Controller Upgrade Changes with new generation systems" states at the bottom "Note: If your problem persists after executing the steps in this article, please contact your contracted support provider, Gather an Autosupport,  Upload a Support Bundle (SUB) and create a service request"...

mentions things like :

"The system serial number for the referenced modular platforms is associated to the base chassis (backplane). While it is possible for a chassis to fail, the modular nature of the platforms infers that more often the Storage Processor (SP) will be swapped causing a change in the way components of the DD System are referred to and replaced.

...

Chassis/Controller Differences

  • In older platforms this description (chassis vs. controller) is completely interchangeable, as these both refer to the same FRU. On newer platforms these are separate FRUs. Normally when we use the term  controller  it refers to both the physical chassis and SP.

Chassis Swap

  • Chassis is replaced with a completely new chassis. System identifiers and other FRUS (including SP) are all carried over to the new chassis. This is a rare process and will become very rare in future platforms due to the separation of FRUs from the chassis."
