Relocating a hot spare drive in a CX-380
- Hello. I am consolidating the disks in a CX-380 and have a question about the best procedure for moving a hot spare disk to a new slot in a different DAE. The hot spare is not in use and I understand I could tear it down, deleting the lun and the raid group, move the disk and rebuild it in the new slot, but I was wondering if there was an easier approach. I have two matching hot spares, so if I use the procedure above, I won’t be without a working hot spare. Thanks for the help. Dennis

No, I don't think you can save the handful of mouseclicks this time.
Now the VNX2 line has a new feature (emphasis on new...which the CX3/80 definitely is not) called Drive Mobility:

Basically, this feature gives you a five minute window after a drive is removed before it is officially failed and a hot-spare is invoked. Within the five minute window, if the drive shows up in another slot, the unit gracefully accepts the change and goes on with life. Of course you can't pull multiple drives out of a single RAID group at the same time, or other crazy things, but this feature does let you re-decorate a bit without disrupting operations.
