m18 R1, SSD heatsink?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Sabrent 4TB M2 drive which is a 4th gen drive.

Will that need a heatsink OR will the native Alienware heatsink be enough?

Thanks,

Stefos

Hi @Stefos1 welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Support for Alienware m18 R1 (1/20/2023) advocates installing the M.2 2280 thermal shield Here.

Hi @Stefos1 thank you for sharing question.

Dell provides thermal shield for M.2 SSD drives that are purchased on the original invoice. Thereafter, the user is expected to purchase additional thermal shields. Alienware M18 R1 (Intel) Parts & Upgrades | Dell USA.

Discounted M.2 thermal shields can be purchased over the internet, Example: Amazon.com: Deal4GO M.2 2230 NVMe SSD Heat Thermal Shield Heatsink X1JNV 0X1JNV Replacement for Dell Alienware M18 R1 M16 R1 2023 Gaming Laptop : Electronics.

M.2 2230 SSD Thermal Shield Heatsink is DP/N X1JNV 0X1JNV.

M.2 2280 SSD Thermal Shield Heatsink is DP/N K3RRF 0K3RRF.

Good morning & Thanks,

Is the  M.2 2280 thermal shield located IN the M18 already or do I have to buy it?

Thanks,

Stefos

i guess the "solution" means you have to use a Dell laptop heatsink or knockoff equivalent.  Sabrent and others like Corsair sell their own heatsinks but they refer to desktop use so although they appear superior to the thinner Dell design, their additional height means the Sabrent or Corsair heatsinks won't fit in an M18R1.  amazing when you look at all the tech that goes into cooling a desktop that this loaded laptop doesn't just melt under heavy use!

Hi Doug,

No..just a thermal shield is needed.

I knew that the laptop only has X amount of space and a heatsink won't fit.
