m15 R1, latest Bios Update exe file will not launch

Hey hey,

I've been trying to update my bios that was recently released from Dell/Alienware. I have a M15 and the install update is 2.10. I have tried to launch it as administrator, with AVG disabled, and nothing happens after I okay the user account control warning from Windows. I even tried updating Bios through Alienware updater and it says it failed with no information. I am kind of a lost at the moment. I have updated them in the past without any issues. Anyone else run into this issue and any solutions?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the Dell Community

First method:

Create a new folder on your desktop named “BIOS Update”

Then download your BIOS update from your Driver Support page.

NOTE: I would have posted your BIOS link here BUT no one has posted the exact model number.

Copy the update to that folder you just created.

Close all Windows and Apps you may have open.

Go to the folder and right click on the update file and “Run as Administrator”

Second method:

Create a bootable USB drive using “Rufus”

https://rufus.ie/

Under “Boot Selection” choose “Free DOS”

Copy the BIOS update to the bootable USB drive you just created..

Insert USB drive, power-on and start tapping the “ F12 “ key.

Boot from USB and run the BIOS update.

After reboot test and post any results.

Best regards,

U2

Note: Before updating the BIOS, ensure that you suspend BitLocker encryption on a BitLocker-enabled system.

When the 2.11 BIOS was released, it also failed to launch.  I tried first workaround from U2CAMEB4ME and it didn't work.  I did the RUFUS method and behold...there was a BIOS Update option from the F10 Boot selection as you mentioned.  Thanks for bringing that to my attention...I now have the 2.11 BIOS installed!

There are several M15 models. Make sure to go to downloads page for your exact model. Directions to install- Dell BIOS Updates | Dell US

I have found it is more reliable to go directly to the Dell website and let it detect my system and tell me what is available (Bios updates first. I found that the "Support Assist" program on my Dell systems can be finicky. The Dell site automatically senses my system without any issues.
In fact, even Intel recommends you take your Dell updates from Dell only, as Dell has tested these drivers...whereas Intel releases are "general" updates for many different motherboards. I can also leave my Internet Security/Firewall on without issue. (Norton/AVG). If it helps.

Same problem for me. For version 2.10. I checked via both support assist as well as Alienware update. They download the files but installation fails. Then I looked at this thread and tried the online method (going to the support assist website). Downloaded but installation failed. My device is Alienware M15.

Did you try Mary G's recommended video.
Access to the Bios may need to be unlocked from Bitlocker.

Would this be with the EXE file or the RCV file?

@wisportsfreak

It would be the .exe file.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=425k4&oscode=wt64a&productcode=alienware-m15-laptop

After creating the bootable drive with Rufus just copy and paste the BIOS .exe file to that drive.

Follow the steps above.

I am using Windows 11 Home. Bitlocker is not present on the home edition.

I'm having the same problem with BIOS 2.10 and my machine is under warranty.  I also upgraded to Windows 11.  Prior to this upgrade, every BIOS update worked flawlessly.  Why would this particular update fail?  Does it have something to do with Windows 11 which Microsoft told me to get?  This seems rather odd to me as Dell should have known there would be people updating to Windows 11.  I don't plan to do the update until running the update I downloaded from the Dell Support website no longer fails.  I hope there is a fix in the works.

Hi TymmD,

When I went into Bios with the boot update, the file was already listed and I didn't need the flash drive. I just loaded from what the bios found already. Worked good from there.

How did you boot from the USB? I followed all steps to create my bootable USB with the new BIOS on it but I cant even boot from it. It is not listed on the boot options
