17 R5, Tobii Eye Tracking on-off switch

Alienware 17 R5 (i7-8750H, GTX 1070, QHD) model Cassini MLK Laptop features include built-in Tobii Eye Tracking hardware and firmware. Windows 10 software has Eye Control. Laptop is only days out of its box and updates are in the process of being installed. The System Performance Report says Error: Process taskhostw.exe has a high CPU consumption of 98.3%. This is the Tobii eye tracking device that is constantly on with no obvious on-off switch. Consequently, all updates are struggling to install properly, including the AWCC Suite v5.2.75.0 ,A00 update.

There are videos of 17 R5 screens having a system tray with the Alien Eyes icon giving manual options.

Does anyone know how to deploy the Alien Eyes icon into the system tray?  Kind regards.

Tobii Experience v1.2.1229.0 says something's not quite right. Tobii Support says go to Taskbar, open Task Manager, open Services tab, right click on Tobii Service and then click on Start. Tobii Experience function is restored.

Tobii Support says their Tobii on-of switch is in Tobii Experience's Customer tab.

Microsoft will deliver Tobii updates, if Dell's SupportAssist does not.

Tobii Support did not reveal how to put their Alien Eyes icon into the system tray.

Many thanks.

https://www.tobii.com/

is not Dell.  There is no support for that here.

There is a note about driver updates

https://help.tobii.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021534074-Installation-or-setup-issues-on-Alienware-17-R5

Your computer comes shipped with the Tobii Experience app and the required drivers, but in case you can't find the app or if it's not working correctly, here is a short guide of how you get the app and the required drivers.

  • Go to Device Manager. Look for EyeChip under Universal Serial Bus devices.
  • Right-click and click Update driver.
  •

    • Go to Settings - Updates & Security. Click Check for updates to find all the required Tobii drivers and install.

    • Then search for the Tobii Experience application in your Windows start menu, if you can't find it installed, you can download it from the Microsoft store here.  This app works with Windows 10 Pro and Home but not with Windows 10 S.

If you need assistance or further help, please contact support.

If you're having issues setting up, it could be caused by a corrupt installation which could happen if your VC redistributable packages aren't healthy. Do a clean uninstall of the Tobii software (instructions on the bottom of this page) and then repair all of your Microsoft VC redistributable packages x64 and x86 (2010, 2012, 2013, 2015) and also make sure you have .NET Framework properly installed. Then try installing the software again.

Hello @speedstep thank you for your comprehensive reply.  Have looked at the to do list and taken stock of what is currently installed on the 17 R5 whose OS is Win10 Pro x64 v1909 build 18363.693.

1. There is no update for EyeChip driver 6.34.18.599 which says it is working properly.

2. Windows Update says You're up to date. It has not updated any Tobii drivers or installed any new drivers since this 17 R5 arrived a week ago. Tobii Game Hub is my recent manual install.

3. Tobii Experience v1.2.1229.0 says something's not quite right.

4. Microsoft VC list

Microsoft VC.jpg

5. .Net Framework list

Framework versions.jpg

6. Alienware Command Center Suite v5.2.75.0 A00 says there are no AlienFX devices. Keyboard lights, etc. are dark.

Agree that there are issues to address, despite Dell diagnostics saying that there are no problems. Exploration of Tobii support pending.

Back to the original question: is it possible to have Tobii on-off switch in the system tray?

Alienware 17 R5 with Tobii Eye Tracking was the first device to get the Tobii Experience application. The Tobii alien icon will not be found in the system tray anymore. When open, the Tobii Experience icon will appear in the task bar and can be pinned, but this is not the Alien Eyes icon.
