M17x-R4 "no audio output device is installed" error

Over the past 2 weeks I have been having more and more issues with my M17x-R4 Alienware laptop. First the screen died. Then the wireless card died. And now there is no sound and when i hover over the sound icon on the taskbar all I see is: "no audio output device is installed". i have had a Dell technician out for repairs 3 times. Motherboard has been replaced twice. he has taken the entire laptop apart and reassembled it. And the sound still does not work. The BIOS has been updated multiple times, drivers been reinstalled multiple times. Everything has been checked by myself, Dell phone and online tech support and the technician who came out 3 times. Has anyone else has a resolution to this issue? the technician recommends that I request a replacement computer as he can't fix it. Not impressed to say the least.

I have had to fix mine twice so far. All you do is download the newest bios, even if you already have it and run it. I believe it is called flashing your bios/cmos.

How is that appropriate business?  My computer is still having the same issues.  We all spend over 2K on this comp and its sounds like NOT 1 persons computer has been fixed.

Very common error with Alienware m17x r4, I have the same model laptop and have visited my friend who  is a computer technician himself.
I have to agree it is a very annoying problem, but not one you can resolve permenantly.
The reason I say this is, I have fixed the problems many times but always seems to come back quickly after changing my settings in 'Sound Blaster Recon3Di Control Panel' when you change the SmartVolume inside 'THX TRUSTUDIO PRO' options to any louder.

To fix this you need to:

- Double Click Computer on desktop
- Right click your Computer inside Computer folder & click properties
- Click on Device Manager
- Scroll down to System Devices , double click .
- Then scroll down to 'High Definition Audio Controller'
- First, Disable it,
- Then Uninstall it .
- I usually make my laptop go to sleep and reopen it , if that doesn't work restart steps and after uninstall is done , right click anywhere inside Device Manager folder and click Scan for hardware changes .

That should get your audio to start working, sometimes it will take you up to 3-4 tries, but on very rare occasions. At least it works !!!!

I can't believe this is the kind of response Dell provides. I paid almost $4k for my alienware. I updated BIOS and drivers recommended by Dell based on my service tag and now no sound. You better have a better answer than that. I wrote to the alienware email address y'all provide several hours ago regarding the matter.Since a built in sound card should be a no brainer I kept reading postings. This is a disaster y'all are copping out on. Please ensure I get a professional response and fix. I only buy Dell but this will be the last if this is the kind of support provided to their TOP OF THE LINE laptops.

Elementrace,

So you are on Bios A12? And you used this sound driver?

Audio Windows 7 = A01, 4/30/12, Creative Labs CT9570, Audio_Creative_W74_5NJ7K_A01-Setup_ZPE.exe, 6.0.100.2033

Audio Windows 8 = A00, 10/26/12, Creative Labs Sound Blaster Recon3Di CT9570, Audio_Creative_W84_X03_A00_Setup-W39M6_ZPE.exe, 6.0.100.2039

The onsite technician is incorrect. A new system exchange is only provided within the initial 30 days from the original invoice date. You may request a like for like system exchange, but it will be a refurbished. Email the team here: AWCC-Resolution_experts@Dell.com
They will need the following information -
Name:
Shipping Address:
Phone:
Service Tag number:
Issue Description: M17x-R4 "no audio output device is installed" error
Number of dispatches: 3
Request: Initiate a refurbished system exchange

Yes, BIOS A12 and Audio Windows 7  "Audio_Creative_W74_5NJ7K_A01-Setup_ZPE.exe".

Another issue is the fact that my warranty ends on September 24th, 2013. I have tried to extended it but because there is an ongoing tech support issue they can't process the warranty extension. Not impressed. I need this resolved ASAP as this is a work computer.

The on-site tech said because he has been called out 3 times and it still doesn't work and he can't fix it that I can request a NEW replacement computer.

There are no new M17x-R4 motherboards. Only refurbished. All you can do is keep having us replace the motherboards until you get one that is fixed.

Hi Chris,

I have done some reading and this issue is quite common with the M17X R4 systems. And it is caused by a faulty motherboard. I have had the motherboard replaced 3 times but unfortunately whenever it is replaced it is with a refurbished one. And that refurbished one most likely came from a computer with the exact same issues. This is unacceptable. If there is no fix for this issue other than a good motherboard than it should be replaced with a NEW one that works.

I fixed my audio a few times by downloading the same up to date bios and reinstalling it. Once my computer booted up it plays the opening music and all is good again.

I just now installed A12 BIOS for my Alienware m17x. Still the error is there "no audio output device is installed". If I install Creative Labs CT9570 Audio Driver it says no hardware found. Should I format my laptop again. I feel this problem I am facing after giving windows update. It used to work perfectly. Please help.

So I am yet another m17 owner with no sound after closing my laptop or even unplugging it from the wall to move the computer. I am constantly getting a BSOD on battery power aswell. My warranty just expired last month so I'm curious to know what my options are, I am pretty embarrassed that my wifes $400 dollar Walmart laptop works better than my 10 pound paper weight.

I made an account just to tell you thank you thank you thank you. I use my computer mainly to make music so my heart dropped when this happened but your solution fixed it.
