Windows Update Problem error code: 80070005

Unable to run windows update on my XPSM1330 laptop with Home Preium. Problem over the last couple weeks. Deleted Spybot, renamed SoftwareDistribution and nothing! Did restore back to 8/12, my last successful update date and worked for one day, then got error code again. Disabled firewall in McAfee and nothing. What is going on here? I've seen this problem all over Google and seems that no one has resolved the issue.

Have you tried re-registering these dll's?  Open an elevated command prompt and type in the following lines one at a time and hit enter after each one

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

did you see this thread?

Mombodog, I tried re-registering the dll's and here are the problems:

1. wuapi.dll-"Binary failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specific path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .dll files"

2. wuaueng.dll- "Was loaded but the call to DLLRegister Server failed. 80070005"

3. wuaueng1.dll- "failed to load"

4. wucltui.dll- same

5. wups.dll- same

6. wups2.dll- same

7. wuweb.dll- same as #1

Now what?

If I go and create a new user account, will I have to reload all my programs or should everything still be the same?

A new user account will be like starting over, your programs will still be there, but may not show up in the programs list, you can copy your old user profile over to the new one.

Scroll down to "Copying your user profile"

This article is for XP, but Vista is very similar.

Since you have permisssions problems with the current account, you may have to boot into safe mode to create the new account. Then reboot and log into the new account, then copy the profile.

"80070005"  this is always a permissions issue.

you have some serious permissions issues on that user account, I suggest creating a new user account and start using it.

Did you read any of the links I posted, there was some good info on how to possibly deal with the permissions issue.

Nope, did not work! Any other ideas? In the meantime, I'll begin working on the next idea you sent me regarding the DCOM configuration. I just don't get it. A google search shows alot of people with the same problem.

Mombodog, darn, it still showed the error code! I set up a new account, with administrator rights and logged on. Ran windows update and got the same error code 80070005. Should I log back into that account and run the regsvr32 on those dll's again?

Excuse the intrusion, but if you don't find a solution, you can contact Microsoft at the link below. They provide Unlimited Email support for Windows Update at no charge.

Thanks, I submitted to Microsoft yesterday. Look at this. how can I change it because this may be my problem:

Someone recommended I verify my DCOM properties. I went in to DCOMcnfg and right clicked on My Computer, then clicked Properties. I checked the COM Security tab and checked and I should have Distribution COM enabled and it is not! also, in the default Authentication level box, it should say "connected" and it says nothing. Also, in the Default Impersonation Level box it should say "Identify" and it says nothing. It won't allow me to enable or add anything. Why is that?
