How to remove an icon from TASKBAR?

I have an unwanted ICON on my task bar I can not figure out how to remove. Can anyone offer assistance?

What is the icon for (what application)? Have you right-clicked on the icon to bring up an options screen? Does that screen give you the option to not start that application with the OS? If not, you can try start->run, type msconfig, find the application in the list of startup items and uncheck it so that windows will not load it on startup.

Right-click an empty area on the taskbar and see if "Lock the taskbar" is checked.  If it is, click it to uncheck it.  You should then be able to right-click the unwanted item and delete it.  I'd then suggest you check "Lock the taskbar" again to avoid the fumble-fingered accidental changes I always manage to do.

Run the app and look under its Options or Preferences settings on the toolbar to see if there's a box to uncheck to stop it from putting the icon on the taskbar.
