General Protection Fault After Last 2 Critical Updates in WIN98SE

Yesterday, I installed Windows Critical Updates KB891711 and KB888113 for WIN98SE.  One or both of these caused a General Protection fault in Explorer,  NVDISP.DRV.  Starting in safe mode, I had to remove these updates.  I would appreciate help in installing them if they can be added without damge.   Also, I do not know which of these is the offending patch.  I do not feel like producing the error again.  Thanks

I installed both updates on a windows 98se machine I have with no conflict. I have read that there is a problem with the KB891711 on some systems. I have read that you might run "msconfig" and uncheck on the startup tab of this hotfix, and it worked on some systems. Hope this helps.

Paindoc:

I downloaded those 2 critical updates on my W98SE system, and had no problems until I re-booted.
Didn't get any GPF errors- but after Windows had appeared to load I found my desktop frozen.

Multiple attemps to reboot (both after shutdown and re-start) produced the same behaviour. I had
read some of those reports of the KB891711 problems Augie mentioned, so I rebooted into safe mode
and unchecked the msconfig/start-up entry for KB891711, and that solved my problem, which has not recurred.

I don't know if this compromises the effectiveness of the KB891711 critical update, but Belarc Adviser
tells me it is still installed, and the Windows update site does not prompt me to download it again.

Joe, I had the same experience after removing the new updates and then reinstalling them.  On starting IE, I would get a blue screen error.  As Augie suggested, I also removed the checkmark for KB891711 in msconfig and now it seems to work OK.  I am uncertain that the patch is functioning but it is obviously still installed.

JOE53, From what I have found, KB891711 is a program that has its own folder and is supposed to start with Windows. "running quietly in the background unlike most patches that only run once."   I have no idea if it will start and prevent an attempt to utlilize a "newly discovered security risk in cursors and icons."   It is a defective program when started on my machine.

I have received this:

Dear Lawrence,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support

From the case log, I understand that you encountered some problems after installing the recent updates. If I have misunderstood you, please feel free to let me know.

First, I would like to explain Microsoft has received reports about issues with KB891711 on Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME. Our testing before release of this update did not reveal problems. We are investigating the reports of this issue with the goal of providing an appropriate resolut
ion. That resolution may be to document a workaround for the issue or a new update posted to the Windows Update site. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused and look forward to having a resolution very soon.

In the meantime, I recommend you perform the steps below to workaround the issue:

Step One: Boot to Safe Mode
==================

1. Restart your computer.
2. While your computer restarts, press down and hold the CTRL until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.
4. Check the issue again.

Step Two: Disable KB891711
==================

1. Click Start->Run.
2. Type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
3. Click Startup tab and uncheck "KB891711".
4. Click OK and restart the computer to test the issue.

If the issue persists, let's go ahead and perform the steps below to test the issue:

Step Three: Remove updates
==================

1. Boot to Safe Mode first.
2. Click Start->Settings->Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Remove "Windows 98 KB891711 Update".
5. Click OK and restart the computer to test the issue.

I believe the information I provided will be useful and I suggest we do not install the update KB891711 currently. Microsoft related team has invested on this issue and I will let you know if there is any update.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft.

Best Regards,

Steven D

Thanks for the update LawrenceH:

Sounds like exactly what I did was what MS recommended to you, up to Step Three, by which time
the problem was resolved, at least for me.

Care to lay any bets that MS ever fully resolves this issue for those of us left using 98SE?
I downloaded those updates with my eyes wide open, but am glad I have disabled the auto-update
function for critical updates. With an old (barely) supported OS, it never hurts to see how
others fare first...

joe58, It is obvious that the new update does not function when disabled.  Further, MS recommended removing the update completely.  I am forever hopeful that MS will come up with a working solution.  They may now have some legal liability if they don't.

Thanks for your help. I did look up further in thread but I guess I just missed it. Thanks anyway for pointing it out.
