Upgrading PowerEdge T320 CPU to Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2

Hi,

We have a PowerEdge T320 and the CPU currently in there is a Intel Xeon E5-2403 1.80GHz. Due to having more computers accessing this server, we feel like a CPU upgrade is needed.

I looked through the dell manual and I believe this CPU (Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2) would be more powerful and compatible.

Could I swap out the CPUs without any issues?

Robert. Per the chart, I ordered a Intel E5-2440V2 CPU and more RAM. The RAM works great but when we boot up the server, we get an error saying the "CPU is not supported". Are there different variants of the E5-2440V2 CPU? I checked the label on the CPU itself and it matches the name.

Thanks.

*Edit*

Nevermind! Upgraded the BIOS and everything is working fine. Thanks!

Hello.

I looked through the dell manual and I believe this CPU (Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2) would be more powerful and compatible.

Unfortunately, this processor is not shown as compatible with T320 server. See table below for a list of supported processors.

The 95W heatsink  should work just fine with any upgrade and yes, swap out the CPU. Ensure that the system BIOS and iDRAC is up to date.

Thanks for the quick response Robert.

I'll go ahead and order the Dell E5-2470 v2 processor as that seems the fasted. Are there any specific types of RAM I need to order? Or as long as it's the correct clock speed we'll be okay. Thanks again!

I haven't found any restrictions on the RAM. As long as both processors have exactly matching parameters i.e specifications, that is fine.

Can you please explain where the above table is coming from? We used this table to conclude the E5-1410 v2 only uses 4 threads in a T320 system and ordered a E5-2430 v2 to upgrade from 4 to 12 threads. I found out the official T320 pdf says the e5-1410 v2 uses 8 threads. The T320 technical guide is a document from 2014.This table was posted in 2017 by you so that is a recent post. It even says the CPU has no turbo. This table might have mislead us into upgrading to a CPU that is only a minor improvement. No good score for a toppic that is about upgrading the CPU.
