R710 and NMI

We were troubleshooting what appeared to be a memory issue and at one point initiated an NMI through the DRAC (and later physical) in the hopes of kicking off a system dump.  The setup steps are as follows:

Windows 2k3 64bit Enterprise with a kernel dump set for a local drive.

NMI option in the BIOS Security settings enabled (for the physical button).

All that happened was a bluescreen with the following message:

*** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

*** The system was halted ***

There was no system dump, just a system halt.  What is the purpose of an NMI if it will not trigger a system dump?  Or did I maybe miss something in the setup?

I resolved this.  One needs to set up a Registry entry like below:

1. Start Registry Editor.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl

3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value , and then add the following registry entry: Name : NMICrashDump

Data Type : REG_DWORD

Value : 1
