Dell Optiplex 7050 SFF : Best video card alternative for gaming, please?

Hi there!

I have a :

Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor Desktop Computer
Intel Core i7-7700 @ 3.60GHz
16 Go RAM
180W Power Supply

The video card is :

Integrated Intel HD Graphics 630

The 7050 SFF spec sheet says it supports :
AMD Radeon R5 430 1GB
AMD Radeon R5 430 2GB
AMD Radeon R7 450 4GB

I also read that a GeForce GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 (Low Profile) consuming 30W would be compatible.

Besides these options, what would be the best compatible video card for gaming, if not the GT 1030?

I am not a hardcore gamer. Here's a short list of games I am interested in :

White Shadows
Minimum graphics : NVIDIA GTX 960 | AMD R9 380
Recommended graphics : NVIDIA GTX 1660 | AMD RX Vega-56

Lake
Minimum graphics : NVIDIA GTX 760 / Radeon HD 7950 (2GB VRAM)
Recommended graphics : NVIDIA GTX 970 / Radeon R9 390 (4GB VRAM)

A Juggler's Tale
Minimum graphics : NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660 / Radeon HD7870
Recommended graphics : NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980 / Radeon 5300

Lonely Mountains: Downhill
Minimum graphics : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti / AMD Radeon HD 7850
Recommended graphics : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 / AMD Radeon HD 7970 / R9 280X

Unravel Two
Minimum graphics : ATI Radeon R7 250X / NVIDIA GTX 650Ti
Recommended graphics : ATI Radeon R9 270 / NVIDIA GTX 670

Inside
Minimum graphics : NVIDIA GT 630 / NVIDIA GT650m / AMD Radeon HD6570
Recommended graphics : NVIDIA GTX 660 / Radeon R9-270

Thanks in advance for your precious answers and stay safe!

Basic online psu calculator for gtx1650 in your pc

Load Wattage: 244 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 294 W

For gt1030

Load Wattage: 199 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 249 W
so it is correct that 180w psu is too weak to meet recommended psu for gt1030.  Gt730 is about the same.  When psu is too weak you may see video card crash, but not draw too much current from psu. The weak psu cannot be “over drafted.”

in summary your 180w psu essentially cannot support any discrete gpu.  You would not find a discrete card that needs much less power than a 30w gt1030.

can you upgrade stock psu?  absolutely.  for example, use 7050 MT psu.240W typical 85% Efficient PSU (80 PLUS Bronze) ENERGY STAR complaint, Active PFC

The optiplex 7050 mt/SFF psu have same form factor and connectors.  It is a direct drop in.

better still get the optiplex 7071 psu. D9 260 W EPA Bronze

or optiplex 7070 MT psu of 260w or 360w.

for gtx1650 I suggest the 360w. For gt1030 either 260w or 360w.

all these psu upgrade are direct drop in.

PS hypothetically if you choose most efficient config of using only ssd (no hdd), no dvd in your pc, for gt1030 Load Wattage: 166 W to 170 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 216 W

this means 180w psu would meet load psu wattage requirement. Load Wattage is the maximum wattage the system may consume in a typical real-world scenario such as running a modern 3D game with the majority of PC components operating at maximum load (CPU, RAM, Drives, etc.). Important: Load Wattage is not the absolute maximum wattage of the system. Various synthetic benchmarks may increase power consumption above Load Wattage levels.

Go @redxps630!!  : )  You do good job.

GTX 1650 is 75w.  PSU 275w and up can power it

"Almost all of the recommended gpu require a 6 pin PCIe connector from psu."

Suggested GPU's on spec sheet are all low-watt.  Wattages (or tdp) can be Googled.  If any of those cards are 30w, then the 180w PSU can handle 30w card.  EDIT:  So much for those cards being 30w or below.  So if PSU can supposedly handle 50w-65w card, then why not the 30w GT 1030?  (One would think.)

From 7050 spec sheet, I think same as OP listed:  Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 610/630 (Intel® 7th generation processors) Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 510/530 (Intel® 6th generation processors) Supports optional discrete graphics Tower/Small Form Factor: AMD Radeon™ R5 430 1GB/2GB, AMD Radeon™ R7 450 4GB

If those cards require 6-pin connection, then the PSU should have it, one would think.

R7 450 = 65w

R5 430 = 50w

Both I think are quite the stretch for a 180w PSU.

when looking at the recommended gpu (not minimum gpu) of list of games, essentially all need at least a 6 pin PCIe which can be overcome by psu upgrade.  what is prohibitive is many if not all models are never made in low profile for SFF.  The latter makes it nearly impossible.  Not to mention 7050 SFF only accommodates a short length gpu too (unless hdd/odd bay is removed).  Physical space restraint both in profile and length of card is more stringent in this case than psu power.
a double slot width GTX 1650 low profile or RX550 low profile may be the best existing gpu upgrade.

Almost all of the recommended gpu require a 6 pin PCIe connector from psu. Your stock 180w psu does not have a 6 pin PCIe connector.

your SFF case also puts significant limit on size and profile of gpu that can fit.

7050 SFF has same chassis as 7070 SFF.  Watch this video and its part list which tells you best currently available gpu list that is physically compatible with the SFF case.

I'm aware that I would need a low profile GPU to fit in my SFF case. The part where I'm scratching my head has more to do with my actual stock 180W PSU. That's why I was looking at a GT 1030 (which seems to draw 30W of power only), like this one :

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0711NWFJX/

But still, the specs of the GT 1030 shows "300-watt power supply recommended"...

The GPU list mentioned in the Youtube video you sent (GT 1050, GT 1650) would fit in my SFF case but would definitely draw to much power, no?

So, once again, what I'm trying to do is to find the best upgrade to my actual Integrated Intel HD Graphics 630 GPU without frying my whole computer. A GPU that will fit my SFF case AND that won't draw too much power.

Thanks!

PSU is good because Dell corp is not stupid. 7050 sff comes no sys fan header most likely. Let's say a person pops in 1050 ti and overclocks.  What is the solution for internal ambient heat?

I'm give the best answer. I'm keep it stupid too without giving the educated answer.

"People at the Dell Corp are not stupid."

No need for a PSU change. Pop the 75 watt card in.

No need to change anything. Dell does not like that

Dell provides an open ended PCIE slot for us to use.

Answering your question about internal ambient heat; after some questions I threw in this same forum related to my hot (more than 80 Celsius degrees when playing) Nvidia Quadro T600 (TDP 40w) on mi 3060 SFF. I must say the T600 has the GTX 1650 chip lowered from 896 to 640 shaders, and it's a good alternative from SFF machines with weak PSU.

First solution I've tried is seem almost perfect for me. I purchased three items:

1 SATA male to 3 fan connectors cable (Because this absolute creepy Dell motherboard hasn't a Sysfan connector, I can't believe it when I realized that)

1 SATA female to 2 SATA male  cable (for provide current to fan and slave HDD)

1 Noctua 8 cm 2.200 rpm fan

Then I proceeded to attach Noctua fan in the front of the case, there's place for it. This Noctua sends fresh air toward graphic card and its temperatures lowered  significantly.

A little problem: Noctua 2.200 rpm fan is a slightly loudly when room it's totally in silence, I should have bought the 1800 rpm model, anyway, once playing I don't hear fan noise.

1,800 RPM might be a little low for cooling.  Fans that just advertise "silent" sometimes don't put out much airflow.  I found that out with a Kingwin 90mm fan I tried.  I let my added fans run at max 2,500 RPM (if I remember right, been a while).  So there's a little noise, but nothing disturbing.  Sounds like a normal PC.  Can barely be heard if at all with music.

Fan I added to back of case (7010 MT) is 1 speed and quiet with good airflow.

Hello again. I'm upgrading external 750w psu to my dell sff intel i7 mobo. bought the 6 pin adaptor. Now i want to drop the rtx 3060 into it.  will the 4.0 be ok?  and if I need to can I use a 4.0 pcie riser to install it outside if need be? tyvm once again.   yours      Douglas
