kl7919,
Since you said you have to be in the same room as the router, I suspect tghe antenna wire(s) may have come loose. Try the INSTRUCTIONS HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> to see if they're attached.

kl7919,
Try...
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Create a Power Plan
Select High performance.
Start, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
While in the device manager, click on advanced. Look and see if this adapter has antenna diversity. If it does, try changing it from Auto to Aux. Make sure on Maximum power and can you tell me what other setting are listed under advanced.

kl7919,
I would suspect that the antenna wire may have come loose. To check it, CLICK HERE.

It have many of possibilities.....first is try checking the wireless card driver in device manager, maybe try reinstalling it.....it may be corrupted.....if this does not solve, try getting a wireless adapter to check, if the wireless adapter have no problem, higher chances is wireless card physically problem, maybe replacing it.....it will some how be costly and time consuming but hope it solve this problem...=D
