External floppy disk drive

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 8600 without the floppy disk drive.  I recently purchased an external floppy disk drive that is supposed to be compatible with my laptop.  I do everything I should as far as installing it, but when I go to My Computer, it does not show up.  Any suggestions as to how I can get this to work?

can you confirm that you've got an usb floppy drive & installed the drivers?

It does not connect with a usb, it connects through the parallel port.

then that's your problem.
you can only use an external usb floppy on that laptop. the connection via parallel port  with external floppy only works with the 4xxx series.

Thanks.  The person I bought it from told me that it was compatible with all 8000 Inspirons.
