Can a Vostro 470 support Virtual Reality?

Hi all,

I was wondering whether you can help. I know I posted a forum thread on 7th October 2017 regarding GDDR5 compatibility for Vostro 470 but is it possible for this unit to support Virtual Reality as I would like to consider the possibility of playing games with Virtual Reality in the future. What components would I need to take into account in order to make this happen? Or is it the end of the road for this unit? Your help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

RocknRollTim

I totally Disagree.   You don't need a new cpu you need a new power supply and GTX 1080 GPU. Intel Core i5-4590 3.7 GHz Processor or better is recommended but not required when you use a GTX 1080 GPU.  Core 2 duo and Core 2 Quad DDR2 systems would be too slow.

Dell XPS 8500 is shipped with the Intel H77 Express Chipset.

Dell configures the following i7 processors with XPS 8500.

  • Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz)
  • Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

XPS 8500 / Vostro 470   can support VR but you must upgrade the BIOS A12  before installing a GTX 1080 and turning secure boot OFF CSM ON.   You can then validate that it runs VR with the superposition benchmark.

You've used up the maximum number of questions.

In addition to the superposition benchmark it appears that windows10 is required.

UNIGINE Superposition Advanced Edition includes the following additional features:

Compete on the global leaderboard
Experience VR with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Loop stress-test to check hardware stability

Microsoft’s VR headsets, made in partnership with major companies have not been released.  Since most of this is not defined and I am not microsoft the answers are NOT forthcoming.

Microsoft confirmed that development kits for its first partner device, made by Acer, will be rolling out in stages in March 2018. Some Developers have tested the device already.

Acer’s headset features two LCD panels at 1440 x 1440 resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, built-in audio and microphone support, and is connected to a PC via HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0.

Oculus Rift Devices have similar requirements.

Oculus Rift :
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 or better.
CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 or greater.
RAM: 8GB or more.
Video port: HDMI 1.3.
USB port: 2 USB 3.0 ports.
Windows 7 SP1 or newer.

Recommended power supply replacement is EVGA SUPER NOVA 750 B1 110-B1-0750-VR NOT B2 or BQ or G2.

Even maxed out, this system won't do VR.  You need a very current (sub-2 year old) very high-end CPU and GPU system for virtual reality.  The floor would be an XPS 8900 system  or a Precision workstation with an upgraded video card.

Hi ejn63,

Thank you for responding to my forum thread. Sounds like I will have to get a new PC like the ones you suggested which supports Virtual Reality or to get a games console which supports Virtual Reality. Thank you for your help.

Hi SpeedStep,

Thank you for responding to another one of my forum threads and really glad to hear my PC can be extended to support Virtual Reality. Is there a mini version of the GTX 1080?

Kind regards,

RocknRollTim

And of course there is SpeedStep, thank you very much for your help again. Also will I need a monitor which supports Virtual Reality or will a pair of 3D glasses or goggles suffice this with an ordinary monitor? Sorry to ask you lots of questions.

Kind regards,

RocknRollTim

Hi SpeedStep,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you and I apologise for reaching the maximum number of questions. Thank you for all your help including all your information and will wait a little longer regarding  implementing VR on my system.

Regards,

RocknRollTim

P.S. I really like the Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 TI Mini 4GB you recommended in my previous forum thread.
