Aurora-R1, Which Video Card to Get?

Hey, fellow extraterrestrials. I've recently been having a world of trouble with the HD5970 in my 4 - year old Aurora and was looking for some upgrade advice.

The two cards I've been looking at are the R9 270x and the GTX 760. When comparing the two cards I've noticed that the Nvidia is cheaper and performs better, which should make it a no brainer. I'm just curious if I'm missing any critical details or things I should be taking into consideration.

Also, will I have any issues if I go from my ATI card to an Nvidia one? What would be the best course of action when doing so? Thanks in advance, all.

My GTX 770 works just fine in my R1. Bios A11. Hope that helps.

Both brands are fully compatible with the system, which means that there are no special requirements to change from AMD to NVIDIA. These are the validated Video Cards for your System:

NVIDIA AMD

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX 260

AMD Radeon HD 5670

NVIDIA Geforce GTX 295

AMD Radeon HD 5770

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX 450

AMD Radeon HD 5870

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX480

AMD Radeon HD 5970

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX 490

AMD Radeon 6870

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX560Ti

AMD Radeon 6950

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX 580

AMD Radeon 6990

NVIDIA, GeForce GTX 590

You can compare these Video Cards using a Video Card Benchmark.

Hmm. Thank you for the comprehensive reply, Naomi. I've searched for the cards on this list that would potentially suit my needs and they are either unavailable or overpriced. I'm assuming this is due to their age and being discontinued, since roughly 2 generations have launched since their release.

You mentioned these cards being validated. Is that to say that newer cards are not compatible? Or that newer models have not been verified as compatible, yet still may work?

The newer models were not built for this machine, so we can't guarantee they will work at a 100%.

Oh, that's wonderful. How's the performance?

Its handled everything I've thrown at it so far.  Single 24" Dell IPS monitor @ 1920x1200.

Ymmv depending on what games you play, what size and how many monitors you have, resolution, etc.

Hi there guys, I have a follow-up question.

What do you think about a GTX 780, the "MSI Geforce GTX 780 Twin Frozr Gaming" (http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N780_TF_3GD5OC.html#hero-overview)?

I'm not sure if it will all work out because it seems quite big (266x129x38 mm) and i already have a soundcard and a wifi card installed. So i'm worried that it would be too crowded in there

Any advice?, thx.

My configuration:

i7 960 @ 3.2 GHz, HD 5870, 12GB RAM, Samsung SSD 840 EVO, Win 7 Pro (64-bit), 04VWF2 Motherboard, BIOS A11, Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card, Creative SB X-Fi Titanium HD, 875W PSU

If you own the Aurora R1 we haven’t test that configuration but that card should fit without problem.

Check the dimensions against the Twin Frozr GTX 770. If it's the same, it'll fit. I have a sound card and wifi card as well. At first I thought it wouldn't fit with the sound card, but it did. The only issue is that the door that opens to the graphics card has to be taken out for it to fit. No real loss there. It's very easy to remove. It may trouble you with how close the fans are to the sound card, but I've had no issues with heat.
