What is the Wireless Network Report in Windows?

Windows 11 and Windows 10 includes a troubleshooting resource that can automatically generate a detailed wireless network connection report on your computer. The report includes details about:

  • The networks that you have connected to
  • The session durations
  • Any errors
  • The network adapters
  • The report also displays the output from a few commands in a command-line interface (For example: Command Prompt or PowerShell.)

If you learn to use this tool, it can be helpful in diagnosing Wi-Fi connection issues.

How do you create a Wireless Network Report in Windows?

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type Command Prompt or PowerShell (Depending on which is the default on your Operating System.) Press and hold (or right-click) on the correct icon that is listed: Command Prompt/PowerShell Then select Run as administrator > Yes.

(For Power Users, right-click the start menu. Select the appropriate application from the menu that appears. You can select Command Prompt/PowerShell (Admin) to run as administrator.)

  2. In the command-line window, type the following command followed by pressing the Enter key:

    netsh wlan show wlanreport

Note: All commands are in English, and check for any changes that may be required for your language.

This generates a wireless network report as an HTML file that you can open in a web browser. The report shows all the Wi-Fi events from the last three days, and it groups them by the Wi-Fi connection sessions. It also shows the results of several network-related command-line scripts and a list of all the network adapters on your computer.

What are the various parts of the Wireless Network Report?

This chart shows the Wi-Fi connection sessions that are available in the report.

Select a section in the chart to go to the corresponding Wi-Fi session shown in the report.

A red circle indicates an error. If you see one, select it to get information about the error.

How do you analyze the results of the Wireless Network Report?

These are the common troubleshooting steps for issues with your Wi-Fi connection:

  1. Ensure that the Wi-Fi is on

  2. Ensure that your laptops physical Wi-Fi switch is turned on (For example: An indicator light usually shows when it is on.)

  3. Ensure that airplane mode is turned off

  4. Move your computer closer to the router or access point

  5. Can you connect to a cellular data network instead?

  6. Restart your modem and wireless router

  7. Ensure that it is not a problem with your cable modem or Internet service provider (ISP)

  8. Ensure that your router is set to broadcast the network name

  9. Generate a Wireless Network Report

This is a detailed report of the last three days of wireless activity. It is to help diagnose connectivity problems you may be having. It also provides you with more information to give to others who might be able to help. Using the information in each of the sections of the report as explained in this article to see what has been happening on your computer.
