Webcam Does Not Work and Reports Various Error Codes

Summary: This article provides information about certain XPS laptop webcams not working and reporting several different error codes when you open the camera application.

Symptoms

Owners of XPS 13 9340, XPS 14 9440, and XPS 16 9640 laptops may experience problems using their integrated laptop webcam.

Opening the camera application may result in the following error codes being reported on-screen:

  • 0xA00F4288: This application error shows that the webcam is in use by another application and is not available for this application to use it.
  • 0xA00F4243: This application error shows that the webcam is in use by another application and is not available for this application to use it.
  • 0xA00F429F: This application error shows that the application cannot find the webcam.
  • 0xA00F4244: This application error shows that the application cannot find the webcam.

Affected Platforms:

  • XPS 13 9340
  • XPS 14 9440
  • XPS 16 9640

Cause

The Dell Engineering team has identified the following reasons for these errors:

  • The Windows operating system thinks that another application is using the webcam. An error that fails to release the webcam or a driver that does not install correctly or becomes corrupted can cause this problem.
  • The Windows operating system cannot find the webcam because the wrong webcam driver is installed on the laptop.

Resolution

Note: You must have administrator rights on your laptop to make any operating system changes or update any software.

 

The following steps take you through fixing the following errors:

  • Start at Step.1 if your laptop reports either of these errors: 0xA00F4288 or 0xA00F4243
  • Go straight to Step.6 if your laptop reports either of these errors: 0xA00F429F or 0xA00F4244
  1. Go to the Windows camera privacy and security settings: Press the Windows + X keys simultaneously → open Settings → go to Privacy and Security → select Camera

  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and check if any applications are using the webcam.

  3. Temporarily turn off the setting to Let desktop apps access your camera, if it shows that any applications are using the camera

  4. Open the Windows Camera application to confirm that the webcam is now working.

  5. Re-enable the setting to: Let desktop applications access your camera.

  6. If the problem returns, install the latest camera driver from the Dell support site. Follow these instructions for your model of the laptop:

     

    The drivers must be installed in this order:

    1. Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver
    2. Intel Serial I/O Driver
    3. Intel Management Engine Components Installer Driver
    4. Intel Integrated Graphics Driver
    5. Intel 2D Imaging/MCU/Visual Sensing Controller Driver for Camera

     

    • Update the XPS 13 9340 laptop camera driver to Intel 2D Imaging, MCU, Visual Sensing Controller Driver for Camera, version 74.22000.3.9, A02 or later. To download and install the Intel-2D-Imaging-MCU-Visual-Sensing-Controller-Driver_PWC1P_WIN64_74.22000.3.9_A02.exe filename

    • Update the XPS 14 9440 laptop camera driver to Intel 2D Imaging, MCU, Visual Sensing Controller Driver for Camera, version 74.22000.1.9, A01 or later. To download and install the Intel-2D-Imaging-MCU-Visual-Sensing-Controller-Driver_C29XJ_WIN64_74.22000.1.9_A01.exe filename

    • Update the XPS 16 9640 laptop camera driver to Intel 2D Imaging, MCU, Visual Sensing Controller Driver for Camera, version 74.26100.13.0, A04 or later. To download and install the Intel-2D-Imaging-MCU-Visual-Sensing-Controller-Driver_K9RYR_WIN64_74.26100.13.0_A04.exe filename

If follow steps 6 still not fix the issue, please follow the below resolution to uninstall camera driver then re-install camera driver:

Resolution 1

 

If customers installed the Norton APP, they can revert the system camera driver by the below steps:

  1. Launch Norton Driver Updater, and select Solve now.

  3. Select Camera and then click Show Results.

  4. Select Drivers shows and click Revert All.

  5. Once complete, reboot the system, and the Camera function is workable

Resolution 2

 

If resolution 1 cannot fix the issue, the customer can re-install the system camera driver by below steps:

  1. Find the attached .txt file under the related Tab change the file type to .bat and Right click to run as administrator to remove the incorrect driver.

  2. Go to the Dell drivers Page to search for the latest released Camera Driver and download and install it.

  3. Reboot the system, and the Camera function is workable

  1. Open Device ManagerViewDevices by driver

  2. Find below eight .inf files and select uninstall device or Remove Driver.

  3. Go to the Dell drivers Page to search the latest released Camera Driver and download and install it.

  4. Reboot the system, and the Camera function is workable
