Inspiron 7737 Windows 10 sleep mode problem

I recently upgraded my OS to Windows 10 (using clean install) and now I have one strange problem.

When I close the lid to put my laptop to sleep, it does some stuff for a couple of seconds (hdd led indicator blinking) and then just sits there with cooling fan on. When it happens, there is no way to wake it up. Display is completely off, no led indicators blinking, no reaction on keyboard/touchpad/touchsreen or usb mouse activity, only cooling fan spins. All I can do is hold the power button to kill it and then start again.

It happens not all the time. If I close the lid right after the system starts, it goes to sleep normally. But after a while I'm using it, it just hangs as I described above.

I have installed all Windows updates, updated BIOS firmware (currently A13), video drivers (Intel 10.18.15.4240, NVidia 355.82), updated chipset driver from the Dell Product Support site. Nothing helps.

Please note that I have modificated hardware: I have installed Crucial M4 128GB instead of stock HDD. But I don't think that this is a problem.

I think I have found the solution.

It's the Intel Management Engine Interface Driver who causes the problem. I downgraded it to version 9.5.24.1790 and disabled updates for it about two days ago. So far so good, haven't noticed any sleep hang yet. I haven't actively used my laptop during these days, I will test it more active on the weekend but I'm pretty sure that it will be OK now.

Answer to this post really helped me: h30434.www3.hp.com/.../5177663

I have found a workaround, if not solution.

I tried this,

Unticked  the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power "  ( In Device Manger --> universal serial bus controllers --> Generic USB Hub--> right Click on it --> Properties --> Power Management). Repeat this step for all the options in universal serial bus controllers and HIDs and adapters )

I have the exactly the same issue.  I have updated all my drivers as well from Dell support site. Video driver (Intel 10.18.15.4240, NVidia 353.62 this version came from the Dell site).  I tried updating NV driver to 355.82, but it made no difference. I made no mods to hardware.

The funny thing is, holding the power button sometimes does not turn the laptop off.  It seems to go into Hibernate mode.  Other times, it forces the laptop to start again.

The issue is present for both Windows 10 clean install and 8.1 upgrade.  It seemed to start around mid-August.  I am not sure if the issue is related to Windows update or video card driver.

I can hardly believe this issue is not wide spread.  Am I one of the lucky few?

I have the same issue.

Initially I did an in place upgrade and my 7737 starting hanging on logging in, about a day after the initial installation. At the time I though the issue might have been the Nvidia graphics driver being automatically upgraded. Booting in safe mode worked but I couldn't get rid of the problem.

Then I did a clean Windows 10 install on a new SSD after updating the BIOS, but with the Nvideo 750M driver disabled, using only the Intel built in graphics. This then left me with the symptoms described above - fan running in sleep mode (from shutting the lid, or pressing the power button or selecting sleep from the start menu). The only way to get out of it is to do a hard reset, which is a pain as you have to try to shut all applications down in advance of any sleep event as you lose your work.

I have since installed the Nwidia drivers and am now using the Nvidia card rather than the built in graphics and the sleep problems still persist. What is a little strange is that the sleep issue only occurs after you have been using the laptop for a while - its not clear what causes the problem but it is obvious it has happened as the fan starts running 100% despite the CPU not being in use and I suspect the cpu not running hot.

I have some vague recollection something similar might have happened after my Windows 8.1 upgrade about a year ago, but the problem went away of its own accord soon after. I have my suspicions it might be another BIOS issue or a driver issue with whatever controls the fan?

Please post if you find a solution, because I am getting fed up of losing work when I have to hard reset the laptop when it gets stuck in sleep mode.

I can confirm now that this happens even when shutting down the system, not only on entering the sleep mode.

I though that the Intel Rapid Storage causes this, but I never installed it on this system and even disabling it in the BIOS did not help.

I have not idea what causes this issue. Please help.

Exact same issue with me too.

But instead of clean install i did upgrade from windows update, and i have switched HDD for 250 GB samsung 840 EVO.

This started happening after the update, everything was fine in WIN 8.1. I have all the latest updates plus BIOS A13.

Lastersound - thanks, this seems to have solved the problem for me, without extensive testing the sleep problem seems to have disappeared by reverting to the 9.5.24.1790 driver, and the fan seems to be on less often than before. It is however less than ideal having to turnoff all driver updates, hopefully Intel will take note and come up with a fix for the driver!

I would also advise owners to update their BIOS as it seems to fix a problem where the login in process hangs when using the latest NVIDIA driver, although the Intel internal graphics driver and older BIOS doesn't seem to have the same problem.

I'm having the same problem not with my Dell Laptop but with my HP Desktop. It occurs exactly as others here have described...fan still on, mysterious sleep that allows only hard reset. I even turned off all of my sleep options and it still happens after a short period of being idle.

My older desktop's motherboard is no longer being updated, and computer models for that company aren't being tested for Windows ten if configured before 2013.

I've been using this little gem of a program in the meantime to prevent sleep (ever)

My Inspiron 7737 is doing the same thing. Problem was the first time it did it during or in the middle of an microsoft update. Lost everything after the 10 upgrade and a few updates. Dell backup and recovery gave me no choice and had to reload everything. I have been slowly allowing the system to update itself over the last few weeks with no issues. The sleep functions were working fine though the reload of all software until....

Dell Backup and Recovery asked me to update. I am no computer genius but this update did more to the system then just that portion of the software. The system began acting as if I had just turned it on for the first time again, telling me where to point the mouse and everything. Then it started with its not waking up from sleep again, fan running when in sleep, no display and an unresponsive power button. To be safe I suspended all microsoft updates, and am still running 8.1. Have not allowed the 10 upgrade yet. Sounds to me that the Dell Back Up and Recovery upgrade is the source of the problem. Dell needs to come up with a patch for that.

I will try and make use of this thread to fix my problem, but I do have better things to do. This will certainly effect my next buy. I may just take it to Bill and Bobs repair and let them do it, I am already confused by this thread. Do the right thing Dell !!

What I forgot to mention is that I also lost touchscreen last time near the end. Today I have lost touch screen again. Ran a system restore point to before the dell back up and recovery update. Still no touch screen. I will wait and see if the restore solves my sleep issue and attack the touch screen as a separate issue. This has turned from a nice little laptop to a buggy pile...

I had the same problem with my Dell 15 7000 7537 model. After multiple reinstalls, it would still hang randomly while going to sleep.

I never had the Intel package installed so I didn't have to remove any of those programs but upon further inspections in the device manager > System Devices I noticed that I was using the problematic Intel MEI version.

Its been 2 months since I've rolled back to MEI 9.5.15.1730 and I have not had this problem once.

I've had to disable automatic driver updates from windows which is not ideal however. I'm waiting for a new release from Intel to test for a fix.

Apparently there was a bug that prevented proper system shutdown/sleep after the laptop had been idle for 2 hours. This appears to have fixed the problem:

I have the same exact problem with my 7737. Clean Win10 install, no problems for months, and then out of nowhere it stops going to sleep/shutting down correctly. I have to hold the power button down to force it but that's inconvenient. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled my laptop out of my bag and discovered it's still powered on with the fan going and it's hot to the touch.
