XPS 17 9720 screen lag issue

XPS 17 9720

XPS 17 9720

My laptop was showing black screen. I connected it to HDMI monitor and it booted to Windows and seemed to work fine. I ordered the same resolution 4K replacement screen online, and installed it just now. It works fine when navigating the BIOS settings or Windows PE. But problems start as soon as it goes to Windows.

Intel drivers from Dell or Intel

New laptop screen - mouse lagging, slight corruption on the screen

HDMI screen mirrored - no issues, the image is fine.

Intel driver uninstalled

New laptop screen works fine, no lag issues.

Intel Graphics driver disabled in device manager, GeForce graphics enabled:

New laptop screen works fine, no lag issues.

BIOS navigation/Windows PE - no lag

I'm completely puzzled. Any help is appreciated. Than you.

Your windows setup might be at issue

@HedgeFundManager I backed up the SSD and installed fresh Windows 11. Same thing. I suspect that the 2nd monitor is running through GeForce chip which is why it doesn't have lag. Something is wrong with Intel graphics. I'll try to redo the thermal paste.

Hard to say as most laptop discrete graphics work like desktops and display is using DisplayPort

My XPS 15 has a UHD display but the HDMI seems fine? Wonder if there is  design difference.

Found the solution. It was the Panel Self Refresh setting. Once I disabled it, the screen started working fine.

I backed up the SSD and installed a fresh copy of Windows 11, but the issue persists. I suspect the second monitor runs through the GeForce chip, which is why it doesn’t experience lag. It seems the problem lies with the Intel graphics. I'll try reapplying the thermal paste to see if it helps.

I have machines with discrete graphics and CPU alone so depending on the test

I use a 4K television for content viewing but my XPS has a 4K panel so I often watch on that as the color quality is excellent
