XPS 17 9700 periodically hanging, forcing manual reset

Hi

I have a user with an XPS 17 9700 which periodically hangs and the user is forced to manually reset the laptop by pressing and holding the power button. The event log has many instances of Event 19 with this text:

Check the remaining resource budget. Module exceeds resource budget, failed to AllocateFwCps, STATUS = Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API

Google searches seem to indicate that this is related to the Intel SST, and disabling it seems to stop the issue, but prevents on the on-board sound working. Is anyone aware of an actual solution to this fairly serious problem?

Any help appreciated.

To resolve the periodic hanging issue on your Dell XPS 17 9700 related to Intel SST, follow these steps:

1. Update Drivers and BIOS

  • Dell Support: Update BIOS and all drivers from the Dell support website.
  • Intel: Use the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to update Intel drivers.

2. Disable Intel SST

  1. Device Manager:
    • Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
  2. Disable Device:
    • Expand "System devices", right-click on Intel SST (e.g., Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) OED), and select Disable device.

3. Clean Boot

  1. System Configuration:
    • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, press Enter.
  2. Selective Startup:
    • Under General tab, select Selective startup, uncheck Load startup items.
    • Under Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, click Disable all.
  3. Reboot:
    • Restart your computer.

4. Contact Dell Support

If issues persist, contact Dell Support for further assistance.
hope this helps
