XPS-15 9550 - Battery / Power On

I always feel the need for a disclaimer.

  1. I believe I read all of the FAQs and other posts covering my topic.
  2. I did not see a specific battery and/or power section to put this post in.

I have a XPS-15 9550 that has been in storage for about 11 months. I need to send my 9510 in for warranty work so I need a back up for 7 to 10 days. Unfortunately, the battery is dead which did not surprise me. What does surprise is the laptop will not charge or turn on. I've tried charging two ways.

  1. The original PSU with the circular connector.
  2. By USB-C / Thunderbird port with my XPS-15 9510's original PSU and my Dell Dock. The Dell Dock was purchase at the same time as the XPS-15 9550.

If I have read correctly, there is no way for me to diagnosis the battery because I cannot boot the laptop into BIOS/Recovery or Windows.

Questions:

  1. Should I be able to boot the laptop with a dead battery? Some sources say you need at least a 5% charge and others say yes you can boot..
  2. Would anyone be willing to give me the odds that I replacement battery will solve the problem? That is if it isn't a more serious issue.
  3. Do you have any questions that might help receive a more certain answer?

Thank you,

Mark

Unplug the system, remove the base cover and disconnect the battery from the mainboard.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules and the SSD or hard drive.

Verify that an OEM Dell AC adapter is working (plug it into the wall and make sure the LED on the DC plug comes on).  If it does not come on, the adapter is bad.

Once you have a verified working OEM adapter, plug the DC end into the system and try powering up.  If it does, it could simply be a dead battery (if it's original, it dates from 2016).

If the system won't power up with a good AC adapter, and the battery disconnected, you do not have (only) a battery problem -- you have another issue, most likely a bad system board.

The least expensive board they have is $270 and that's with an i3 CPU -- add the labor charge ($100), tax and shipping and it'll top $400.

Compare the cost of a complete, used and working XPS 9550 -- or a newer 9560, 9570 etc.  It may be less expensive than a repair to your system.

@ejn63

Thank you for the quick response.

I followed your process twice with no luck. The OEM PSU reads 19.90V. I wish the leads to my multimeter were small enough to test the battery.

Now it is a question of repair or not. I think replacing a motherboard might be beyond my skills. Does Parts People have a good reputation in this forum for sending in for repair? $200 for a full motherboard repair is less expensive than a new refurbished laptop from Dell.

Thank you,

Mark

They have a $200 board level repair option. If it cannot be fixed, it is only $50 for diagnosis and return shipping. If a new battery is needed after the repair, then that would be an additional fee.

No need to repair. Thank you for your assistance.
