XPS 13 plus 9320 - screen not working and flashing 7 white and 2 amber LED

I was using my XPS yesterday when suddenly the screen went dark and an LED above the function keys started flashing in the order 7 white and 2 yellow.  On rebooting you get the XPS logo followed by the blank screen and flashing LED, although you can hear it make the 'bong' sound when it boots up windows.  When booted up whilst holding D it cycles through the colours as it should.  An external monitor also works.  However, the cap lock led doesn't come on when you press this.  I've seen various historical discussions on a very similar issue but haven't found a solution.  Having spoken to Dell Customer services they want to replace the screen/LCD cable but not sure this makes sense!  Any advice would be really appreciated.

2,7 is a display failure and the screen/cable is the first thing to try.  If that doesn't solve the problem, the only other cause would be the mainboard.

Can you get a good image if you connect an external screen?

Thanks for the message.

Yes, an external screen works fine.

@ejn63 I had the same set of the flashing lights on the caps lock button of my 1 year old XPS 13 and was also told it meant display failure.  I was hoping that replacing the cable would solve the problem but was told the screen would also have to be replaced.  That solution is cost prohibitive.
