XPS 13 9380 Display Backlight Not working

I got a new XPS 13, and as I was setting up my new laptop, my old XPS 13 9380 display failed. External screens work with no issues so it can't be the graphics card. I can see barely see the screen. Most things are too dark to make out

I ended up buying a new display assuming the issue was with the display but no change.

Has anyone else had this issue? When I called an unofficial tech support they said it could cost £250 which was the price I paid for the spare screen.

I found this but I did no update to the firmware when it happened: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-9380-doesn-t-turn-on-after-update/m-p/7561842

I've always had some screen flickering issue but I guess it's not related: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-9380-screen-flicker/m-p/8037048

Any help is appreciated.

Chances are the power supply to the backlight is the issue - which isn't a repairable part.  The only solution is to replace the system board.

If they're quoting an all-in price (which I doubt), that's a bargain -- the board alone goes for $500-600+.

Welcome to the Dell Community   @oradwell

Hold down the "D" key, push the power button, release the power button, wait 2-3 seconds and release the "D" key

The laptop should go through an LCD test of solid White, Red, Green, Blue and Black 2 or 3 times.

After completion it should try to automatically boot 2 or 3 times.

Post any results.

Best regards,

@oradwell

It should just go through the full screen color test, then try to boot like normal.

Did you notice any change in the background during the test???

It could be ever so slight.

That would tell you that the "Video" signal is reaching the LCD.

But as you say there was no change.

That would then indicate that the LCD power circutry on the system board is bad or the cable from the system board going to the LCD???

Have you tried the cable yet???

@U2CAMEB4MEthanks for trying to help. I know that video signal reaches the LCD because I am able to see the BIOS (because it's very bright compared to other screens) when I go into it. It's very dark but because the BIOS screens are very bright normally I can make out the options.

I ended up giving it to a repair shop. They replaced a tiny chip and it was good again. The cost was £340 though.
