XPS 13 9300, volume stuck at max level, #2

<Started your own thread. DELL-Admin>

Hello! I've been having this exact problem since 2022. @colefeldmann, did you solve it?

The volume is by default at its maximum, no matter what number the slider shows. Also the audio jack is really faulty. It works after every boot up but it just stops working after a while (5 minutes or so).

I've tried absolutely everything driver related but I'm just out of ideas.

@Gagur Hello! I'm absolutely sure this is not a motherboard failure. I had already this problem when my laptop had Windows 10 installed and when I did a fresh Windows 11 install, the volume worked as expected for 2 weeks.

Then at some point, there was a Windows Update that messed everything up. So it's 100% a driver issue.

Dell fix this 4 year old bug on a $1600 laptop. Just mind boggling.

Best regards,

El Chanclas

Problem fixed.

I unplugged and plugged the battery. I also placed the cable that goes above the battery through the clips located on the motherboard and the SSD cover, so it doesn't touch the battery at all. And it all worked.

The audio jack is unfortunately still broken, it doesn't detect any earphones I plug in.

Regards,

El Chanclas

@Provalinsky @Anto11 Were any of you able to solve this issue? I've been suffering it for 2 years already.

I had this exact issue suddenly appear the other evening on my 9300.

When clicking the audio volume mixer the device has for the last 3 years displayed as "Speaker )High Definition Device)" or similar, and audio / volume / headphones all worked fine.

Then the other evening, I noticed a red "x" icon over the volume mixer, and no audio device was found. Meanwhile Windows was saying that updates had been applied (didn't see anything about audio devices though), so I did a reboot. When it came back up, the audio volume mixer showed "2 speakers realtek audio" or similar (the "2" part was strange). And despite the volume mixer or keyboard button settings, volume was at maximum, and quite distorted, no matter what. Tried a few different reboots, tried finding a recent update to uninstall, couldn't find anything obvious.

What worked in the end was uninstalling the most recent existing realtek audio driver and reinstalling, by downloading the official Dell realtek audio drivers (1GB!!) from here:

Might be a different download for your own specific system, but this worked. It uninstalls the current drivers and software, then reboots. After reboot, the volume mixer again shows my previous "High definition device" label, and audio is working correctly again, but I decided to let the driver installer complete the installation of the official driver again and do its final reboot. Still working fine, and now with the "Speakers (Realtek Audio)" label on the volume mixer.

@jdbrookes Hello! It seems that your link was hidden by a Dell admin. Was it an official driver? Maybe you can share the driver version ID.

Could someone from dell please assist with this issue. Ive recently had this issue begin the past couple weeks and its extremely frustrating. Ive noticed this isnt a new issue with however many other uses have had this issue from 4 + years ago. How could it possibly be that this issue still persists and there is no consistent answer on how to resolve. For the love of god this shouldnt be difficult!

Edit: Dell DOES NOT care about its customers concerns and complaints as you can see from this thread that has gone unanswered and this problem that has lingered for customers for years from my research trying to find a solution. Never buying another Dell product again. What a terrible company to purchase from. Terrible products, terrible customer service.

Had the same problem. Logged in to Dell support, checked for updates and there was a Realtek download outstanding. Now fixed.

@sm92 The lack of any support is also puzzling to me. I had to get the solution to this problem on Reddit.

And as I mentioned, my audio jack is still not working at all, which is definitely not acceptable for a $1600 laptop.

spent £700 on a repair which is ridiculous, they started with 300 and I thought okay I'll pay that but then they required more money to complete it. After spending all that money, I now have this audio issue. Mind you they replaced the motherboard in the repair. Unplugging battery and reinserting didn't work. Looks like no more dell once this laptop withers away which seems to be already happening.

Hey Dell "support". How about you provide instructions on where to download the latest official audio driver?
