USB Problem, 2 out of ports stopped working. (

Hey all, I have a Dell XPS 17 9700. I set it up with 2 basic small hubs that had HDMI so I can run 2 monitors. However I kept getting random disconnects for mouse (probably keyboard too), so I another hub that is powered and has 2 HDMI ports on it, and plugged that in, it worked however resolution was different on the monitors and that didn't work out so I tried to put back the prior setup, however noticed 2 of the USB ports stopped working. Basically 2 ports on left side work but on right side where the card reader is they don't work, and if I plug something in the system doesn't even make a sound or react. Are they fried somehow? (
Did the hub break them? (
It had regular cable to hook up to usb port and also another cable to power it. I believe I did everything correctly. What could have happened? Any way to fix or its fried? Really need my setup back so I can work... This is ridiculous it happened, never seen such issues with hubs and I setup hubs before for clients but mostly DELL branded, got this Targus one as I wanted something compact, it was like 100 bucks not a cheap one.

Perform hardware reset on the laptop.  Remove AC power, disconnect and remove the battery.  Press and hold power button for 30 seconds.  Reconnecting the power and check USB ports with a flash drive or a mouse.

Perform ePSA diagnostics.  Boot or reboot the laptop, immediately keep tapping on F12 until you see the message of one time boot menu appear on top right corner of the screen.  From the menu, select to run diagnostic and take note of any error found.

It does not hurt to access BIOS settings to verify if all USB ports are enable.  Also, verify in Device Manager to see if Windows turned off USB root hub due to issue detected.  Reinstalling chipset driver to repair corrupted driver if issue found in Device Manager.

If all troubleshooting steps yields no solution, a motherboard replacement may be your next step.

@Chino de Oro

Thanks for response, strangly the ports started working again this morning, I did turn off the laptop and let the battery drain out, wonder if that helped.

Now everything works but I have two same exact monitors on the Targus hub and one allows full resolution the other one doesn't and the max it let's is 1280x720. Any idea how to make that work?

Also I understand that the hub can power the laptop, but is it ok if I power the laptop with it's original cable and still run power to the hub, that shouldn't conflict right? I'm assuming it should work similar to POE setup where the wire detects if there is power needed or not.

Yes, that would have the similar result, removed all power to clear NVRAM.

About your display resolution issue, it could be the Targus hub capability and/or restricting the bandwidth to provide two FHD displays.  Different hubs may yield different results.
