Cloned SSD won’t boot but now original won’t either :-(

Hi all - I cloned my Windows 11 XPs 15 7590 nvme SSD to a larger size of the same make using Samsung data migration.

However when installed the system starts windows but blue screens with a restore system / continue boot error screen that loops with all options.

I tried cloning again with Macrium reflect and used boot repair option but same error.

Unfortunately on reinstalling the original SSD the same blue screen occurs. Windows RE reports can’t repair startup and on reboot fails with error report of boot device not found.

It is possible I changed something vital in BIOS by selecting restore BIOS defaults trying to get the clone to work. Currently the BIOS is set to AHCI with SSD detected in system and in UEFI the only boot option offered  is Samsung 980 partition 2 for both original and cloned SSDs.

In Macrium, there were 6 portions cloned - I think partition 2 was a small FAT type with the main NTFS Windows partition being partition 4.

I would be very grateful for any advice on how to get my boot back

Many thanks in advance

Installing the original drive back into the system.  When you get the Windows RE, select advanced repair, then select start up repair, choose option 4 to boot into Safe Mode.  If your system can boot to Safe Mode, select to restart and your system should be working again as before.

If all else fails, as the last resort, installing the new, larger drive and performing a clean install.  After the system is up and running, using an adapter to access your original drive for any data retrieval.  Once it's done, using diskpart (ask question if you are unfamiliar with it) to clean and reset the original drive to be used as an external drive or whichever suitable purpose.

@Chino de Oro Very many thanks indeed - in the end I also needed to repair the mbr and fix boot via the CMD as well but am now up and running
