XPS 8940, use Precision T5810 92mm fans?
Hi everyone,
I have an xps 8940. The case fan on the back is really measly, only 80mm. I wanted to get an upgrade, but don’t have money to spend. I have a few t5810 desktops laying around, and they have better fans.(I’m talking about the front case fans, the ones that sit in a 3 fan array) I was wondering if there was anyway I could use them on the xps. The fans are the right size and all, as they are 92mm, but when I plug it in, I get an error that the fan did not respond correctly. Is there any way I can use this fan?
thanks!

user reported The stock fan that came with XPS 8940 is Delta Electronics Inc. DC Brushless fan AUB0812HHD rated at 12V, 0.40A, Dell P/N D4NJ4-A00. This fan uses a standard 4 pin connector
otoh Dell Precision T5810 T7910 3 Front Fan Cooling Assembly 1B33FUE00 Y1F7R uses Dell proprietary 4 pin fan connector with a latch. the wiring of this connector does not have same pinout as the 8940 fan. it is dangerous to plug fan of wrong pinout in 8940 motherboard.

user reported Dell proprietary 4 pin fan latch connector:
the 4 wires are yellow red black blue in order. red is typically Vcc, black is gnd. yellow and blue are sense or pwm (not certain which is which).
otoh xps8940 fan 4 wires are black red yellow blue in order. assuming at least red and black pinout are the same, you can see it is dangerous to plug the Dell 4 pin fan latch connector into 8940 motherboard.

Got it, but can I rewire the fan headers? Or will that not work either?

before you rewire you should verify the pinout. color of wire is somewhat reliable but you want to be cautious. just to save a few bucks on fan but risk your motherboard is not worth it.
