XPS 8910, need recommendation on PSU and GPU upgrades

Hi everyone, I just received an old XPS 8910 from my friend

with the following specifications:

  • RAM: 64GB DDR4
  • CPU:  Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1070 OEM (8GB RAM GDDR5)
  • PSU: 460 Watt

I want to make some upgrades to the GPU Card. I don't have much experience in building computers so I think this will be a good place to ask questions:

  1. Can I upgrade the GPU to more VRAM GPU like 24GB or at least 16GB GPU? What should I consider besides the bus and power connector?

  2. As I researched, power-hungry GPUs require more power thus a new PSU is necessary. The current 460W PSU may not be enough, so I am planning to buy a new PSU (such as 600W, or 750W), but there are a lot of things to consider such as PSU dimension, pinout type that is compatible with the motherboard, etc... I want to ask if any recommendations for PSU replacement for Dell XPS 8910 are there.

Since this is a pre-built PC so I think this is kind of hard to find a compatible replacement.

Thank you very much.

What you want can be narrowed down to the RTX 4080 with 16GB and RTX 4090 with 24GB.

Unfortunately, the XPS 8910 is not a good candidate for either cards.  There are Quadro alternatives but their costs making it not a feasible upgrade.

Here are others upgrade cards that may give you some ideas of their systems performances https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Dell-XPS-8910/30954

@Chino de Oro Thank you very much for answer me, can I ask about the PSU Upgrade? Is it possible to upgrade the current 460W PSU into more powerful PSU (such as 600W or 750W)?

I got a 8940 with a 500w psu. I would like to upgrade also but I think Dell uses a different case for anything higher. So, you can upgrade to a 500w for sure. I am looking to upgrade my GPU but the one I want requires 650w. I think the only way is to get a new MOBO and case that is a standard form factor. If there is another way I sure would like to know also.

The XPS 8910 uses standard ATX power supply.  You can upgrade it with third party PSU of your choice.  OEM power supply is about 140 mm for exact fit.  Modular will help with cables organization.

Re: Can I upgrade the GPU to more VRAM GPU like 24GB or at least 16GB GPU? What should I consider besides the bus and power connector

as Chino may have alluded to, the 8910 cpu being intel 6th gen is getting outdated to match modern fast gpu such as RTX 4000 series

you can still do it but expect the power of those gpu to be hampered by cpu.

another factor to consider is the cramped interior space of 8910 chassis not good for high power gpu cooling.

it will do better to swap to a high air flow case.

back to the first point.  upgrade to 8930 mobo which is still mATX and have intel 8th gen cpu is a step up from 8910.  you can still use the DDR4 ram and cpu heatsink etc.
