XPS 8500, dual monitor setup?

I have an XPS 8500 desktop running off Windows 10.

My existing Dell screen is getting cluttered and as I have a 2nd Dell screen that I can plug into the back I thought I would use the dual monitor system.

I have used a HDMI splitter cable so both screen are connected to the single HDMI port and the desktop doesn't recognise the 2nd screen.

The standard VGA lead supplied with the monitor doesn't fit into the other port on the back.

Can anyone help me as I'm not the most tech savvy person to say the least.

Go to Dell's support page and put in your Service Tag number. Then follow the link to system configuration and check your factory configuration list to see what video card -if any- was installed. It will be either an AMD or NVidia add-in video card.

Then go here and look at the diagram of the back of your PC. The onboard video ports are #16 (VGA) and #17 (HDMI). An add-in video card will be in the area marked #20 in that same diagram.

Assuming you have an add-in video card that only has one HDMI port, and doesn't have another port supported by monitor #2, you can use the onboard HDMI port for #2, but you have to do a couple of things first:

  1. Monitor #1 must be connected to the add-in video card first
  2. Reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup. Look for the Intel Multi-Display option and enable it. Do NOT change anything else in BIOS setup but save the change to the display option before exiting setup.
  3. Power PC off and connect monitor #2 to either the onboard HDMI port (best choice) or to the onboard VGA port.
  4. Reboot the PC and go to the Windows Display options screen to complete the configuration of both monitors.

Thanks for responding.

The PC says it is a

XPS-8500 i7 3770CPU @ 3.40Ghz

Hopefully that makes sense

I have no idea if I have a dedicated video card but the Google search
says as its plugged into the HDMI port at the back of the PC I should
assume it is the integrated feed.

1. What exact model?

Do you have a dedicated video-card installed (in one of the lower slots) or are you just using the "on-board" video card?

2. No, that is not what you want to use.

1. OK

2. Personally, I can't help you without knowing if you have one, and the exact model of it.

HDMI is Digital there are no splitter cables for that or USB or SPDIF etc.

You need a card with 2 or more video outputs.
