Studio XPS 8100 would not install Win 10

I think it has latest bios A05.  Cpu is i5-650.
I know, old cpu.

it looked okay when Win 10 install process started and I saw that files being written to HDD, but then it would fail all of a sudden and gave error msg. Tried twice. Same.  Win 10 usb installation media is definitely good.

I then tried install Win 7 using a dvd disc, went smoothly.

any idea?

using the 8100 board to test install in Area 51 R2

so far AWCC and leds run well.

OMG - I thought I was the only one who still has a working Studio XPS 8100. It will be 14 years old on March 10, 2024!

I have over time replaced much of the hardware, but the computer still has the original motherboard and CPU.

I installed Windows 10 on my 8100 in 2016. I did this with a 'clean install'- I erased the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10. This is the only way that I install an operating system. Windows 10 installed perfectly the first time, and it runs amazingly well to this day.

As you know, a clean install on supported hardware always works. Therefore, if you did your clean install correctly (which I presume is true) and yet the install failed, you must have hardware unsupported for Windows 10, possibly the graphics card. Have you researched the error message to see where it leads?

I'm not sure what I'll do with my 8100 when Windows 10 goes out of support in 2025. If the hardware still works, maybe I'll try Linux or maybe Chrome OS Flex.

wow it is the video card. I tried dvd install first same error code 0x8007025D

I googled it makes no sense

I removed the video card and use integrated video port of i5 650. no more crash or error during install.  So when there is option to have igpu or discrete gpu for LGA1156 cpu, use igpu to install win 10. Strange enough that Win 7 install was not affected by this bug.

another lesson is error code is like a person having belly button pain and says ouch-ouch1010. It tells you nothing specific. Machine can have all sorts of bug that lead to common pathway of displaying same error. Do not read forum discussion on error code for it is a waste of time only confusing you more. Rather focus on your own pc and trying to decipher possible cause of issue

That is an interesting point.  Some 1st gen lga1156 cpu requires a discrete gpu some does not. I think i7-870 needs one but i5-650 does not.  I will try using the integrated intel HD gpu of i5 or try using a dvd drive instead of usb.  Lastly I could try transplant a HDD containing Win 10 installed via legacy bios from another pc.

I have the Core i5 750 (2.67 GHz)

I hadn't thought of using on-board graphics - that could work.

I did three clean installs (8, 8.1, 10) and was careful to reinstall all the original drivers and utilities each time. Here are my notes for the install - I haven't seen these in years. Sorry for the length:

************************************
*  First Drivers for a Clean Install  *
************************************

Immediately after installing the operating system, install these drivers:

1. Chipset driver - THIS MUST BE INSTALLED FIRST

R245415.exe
Chipset: Intel Ibex Peak H57 Chipset 9.1, A00
Intel Ibex Peak H57 chipset 9.1 driver 9.1.1.1020
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

The Windows Program Compatibility Assistant will notify you that "Compatibility settings have been applied" and then the driver should install successfully.

This will happen for every install of a Dell-supplied driver.

2. Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) Driver

R245420.exe
Serial ATA: Intel Rapid Storage Technology 9.5, A00
Intel Rapid Storage Technology 9.5 application 9.5.0.1037
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

The Intel RST application requires that the .Net Framework 3.0 is already installed.

The .Net Framework 3.5 (which includes .Net 3.0 and 2.0) can be installed from Control Panel, but this requires an internet connection because Windows Framework won't install from the ISO. Microsoft: "Because of complications around how the .NET Framework 3.5 must be installed, it is not possible to provide a separate, standalone installer that can run independently of Windows Update."

Without the .Net Framework 3.0, this utility will only install the Intel RST driver, but that's all I need for now. This is the original RST driver installed on the Studio XPS 8100. Later, I can upgrade to newer RST software.

3. AMD Graphics Driver

amd-catalyst-15.7.1-win10-64bit.exe
AMD Catalyst (Graphics Driver) Version 15.7.1

This is the final WHQL-certified driver for the Radeon HD5670 for Windows 10, 8.x and 7.

4- Realtek Audio - Connect the audio cable first! (green connector) R297987.exe
Audio: Realtek ALC887 6, A01
Realtek ALC887 Audio 6 driver 6.0.1.6299
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

R245428.exe was the original and R297987.exe is the successor Realtek driver installed on the Studio XPS 8100. Later, I can upgrade to the newest driver.

*******************************************
*   Second Drivers After a Clean Install  *
*******************************************

Connect to the internet with an Ethernet cable (Windows will install its own Broadcom Ethernet adapter driver) and install the .Net Framework 3.5. which is needed for
the Intel AMT HECI driver (and Intel RST below.)

Then install these drivers in the following order:

1. R245424.exe
Chipset: Intel AMT HECI (Consumer Desktop) 6, A00
Intel AMT HECI (Consumer Desktop) 6 driver 6.0.0.1179
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

The Host Embedded Controller Interface (HECI) driver is a software interface used to communicate with the Active Management Technology (AMT) subsystem. AMT is a hardware and firmware technology for remote management of personal computers in order to monitor, maintain, update, upgrade, and repair them. The HECI driver is now called the MEI (Manageability Engine Interface) driver. Windows 8 installed its own
MEI driver, however you must install the AMT HECI driver in Windows 10. Otherwise, Device Manager will show a yellow exclamation for the PCI Simple Communications Controller.

One or more components of the Intel AMT HECI driver will fail to install, which apparently doesn't matter.

2. Broadcom Ethernet Controller

R245425.exe
Network: Broadcom BCM57780 LOM 12.2, A00
Broadcom BCM57780 LOM 12.2 driver 12.2.2.2
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

This is the original Broadcom driver installed on the Studio XPS 8100. Later, I can upgrade to a newer driver. According to the installer, this Ethernet controller is the "Broadcom NetXtreme-I Netlink" controller.

3. Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST)

SetupRST 14.8.0.1042 folder
Version 14.8.0.1042
Date: 12/14/2015

4. Broadcom NetLink 57780 (not NetExtreme)

win_k57-15.6.0.14 folder
Version 15.6.0.14
Date: 08/14/15

5. Realtek Audio Driver

0006-64bit_Win7_Win8_Win81_Win10_R279.exe
Version R2.79
Date: 6/25/2015

6. Brother HL2270DW (full install package)  <<=== For my printer, which I still use.

HL-2270DW-inst-D1-win8-useu
Version D1 (for Windows 10 64-bit)
Date: 12/11/2012

***** UNNEEDED DRIVERS *****

R245418.exe
Serial ATA: Intel Rapid Storage Technology 9.5, A00
Intel Rapid Storage Technology 9.5 driver 9.5.0.1037
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

The Intel RST driver was installed by R245420.exe

R245423.exe

Video: Intel ClarkDale Integrated Graphics 8.15, A00
Intel ClarkDale Integrated Graphics 8 driver 8.15.10.1952
For Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

(The Core i5 750 is actually a Lynnfield processor, not a Clarkdale processor.)

To install the integrated graphics driver, you need to enable integrated graphics in the BIOS and disable the discrete video card. Windows 10 may provide a native driver for the integrated video controller. If it does not, you may install this one.

R245428.exe is the original Realtek driver installed on the Studio XPS 8100. It was succeeded by R297987.exe

R245429.exe
Removable Storage: Foxconn Card Reader (FITI PID9106)
1.4, A00 Foxconn Card Reader Icon Manager 1.4 application
1.4.915.1 for Dell Studio XPS 8100 Windows 7 x64

This is entirely optional.

I got the same error when trying to install Win 11 via a USB DVD and integrated video port.  Now I realize that USB DVD can run into error in this old Dell motherboard chipset while traditional sata DVD drive still works.  Yikes the fun with old stuff,
