XPS 8940, rackmount case recommendation?

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

Hello, I'm a studio owner and I would like to transfer the components of my XPS 8940 into a chassis that can be mounted to a 19" rack.

My understanding is that I cannot keep the DELL motherboard so the chassis should include a motherboard that is compatible with the GPU, RAM and CPU. I would also like to be able to fit in a high quality, EMI free, silent PSU in there.

Would anyone have any recommendations? Thank you!

@sidewinder88 You would have to mod the case to use the DELL power button, as the standard power button wont work.  You would have to figure that out on your own. As I said before you would need to get a motherboard to go into a server case, typically you can just get a server board  and install that into the server case if you like.

You could go with an MSI motherboard, they are decent.  As I said you are gong to have to google, depending on which 4u case you go with so forth may change out the parts you would need to get. TBH between the case the psu the motherboard unless you can get them on the cheep. You are almost better just buying a 4U prebuilt.

You would need a 4U case as it would be the only rack mount case that would support the GPU upright, if you want to mount it sideways you could try a 3U or a 2U but due to dimensions it may or may not fit properly, 4u at least negates that.

Since you are not going to keep anything from the 8940 except RAM GPU and CPU, are you going to air or watercool?

If you are going to air cool Noctua D12L which is an air cooler that will mount in a server case would be your best choice for air cooling, if you plan to go AIO there are other options.   For PSU most standard PSUs should fit, but you would need the case specifics first.

RM42-502 SilverStone would not be a bad option and would support 240 mm AIOs, Normal ATX PUs can also be installed into the case. So any EMI-free Silent PSU would fit. Seasonic PRIME Titanium is a decent PSU.

Outside of that you are going to have to do some google research on what you want to use based on your budget.

@sidewinder88 You are welcome, you can 100% do it. However your gong to be gong down a rabbit hole depending on which way.

I did this on pc part picker, https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G47m9c

you can ignore the price on ram storage and all the components you can salvage from the 8940.
