Why update BIOS?

I have a Dell XPS T600, 384K Ram, Win 98se. I have not changed the BIOS from the original config - A07, I think. What advantage would there be to upgrading the BIOS? If there is any, what should i upgrade to?

TallTex,

When you check the things that the BIOS version fixes make sure it applies to you. As a general rule it is recommended that you update your BIOS only to correct a problem you are having.

You can go to the download tab at the top of this page and from the first menu (#1), select 'flash bios update'> GO. Next page, click on  'Dell Dimension System BIOS'. Then click on 'previous version'. Then click on each BIOS to see what it fixes. Follow the on screen instructions to save the file to (floppy) disk. One note of caution:
When you attempt to flash your BIOS, be sure there aren't going to be any known power interuptions (power outages, lightning storms, etc.) as this can render your system useless.

Thx Joe -

Since I'm not having any problems that the BIOS upgrades will fix, I will not do it.

I have another question for you- I upgraded the memory from 128k Ram to 384k Ram and noticed a slight improvement. What improvement did you get going to 640k? I've also wondered about upgrading the processer using PowerLeap. Have you thought about that?

TallTex:

Just to emphasize the above, I also have a T600
with 98SE, to which I've added a printer, a scanner,
640 RAM, and upgraded the CD-RW from 12x to
48x.  Have never needed to upgrade the original A04
BIOS.  The info on the upgrades never  seemed to apply.

Hi again:

To tell you the truth, I didn't notice that much of
an improvement (originally had 256 RAM), and if
you add more than 512, you have to make a few
tweaks to make it work right. But I'm not into
games- the most improvement was with Adobe
Photoshop.

Never felt the need to upgrade the processor, but
if you are interested, I'll find you a link to a good
site (Duhvoodoman).

Edit:  Here it is.
