tif or tiff images

I just fixed my problem viewing a tiff image on the internet.  Apparently Windows XP does not come with kodakimg.exe as Windows 95-98 did.  I had to download a tif viewer from the internet, and now I can see the tif images.

If you install QuickTime on your machine, it will view most of the image/video file formats that Windows doesn't handle.

XP comes with Picture and Fax viewer and it will open tif files.

Right click on a .tif file, click 'open with' (not open). Click choose program, select Windows Picture and Fax viewer, check the box 'always use the selected program to open this type of file', click OK. That will set the association to the Picture fax viewer, and it will open next time you double click on a .tif file.

Thanks for the good advice. What program is the MS picture and fax viewer ?

It isn't a program as such. It is a dynamic link library file, shimgvw.dll, part of Windows XP. You can't make a short cut to it or open it by itself, only by using it to view a picture. Once opened, you can drag and drop other pictures into it, or for pictures in the same folder click the back and forward buttons to view the picture files in that folder (doesn't have to be in a My pictures folder).

Personally, I have Office Pro XP and use the MS Office Document Imaging program for tiff and tif files, which is part of Office Tools. That is a 'proper' application that you can open by itself like any office program. I find it more convenient because it has a layout a bit like Adobe Reader, with the pages shown as thumbnails in a left column, so for multipage .tif files and faxes it is easier to select any page.

Thanks for all your suggestions, but I already had Quick Time, Fax Viewer, three photo programs, etc., etc., on my computer.  othing opened the tif image on the web.  I didn't even have the option to indicate which program to use to open it.  I even changed folder settings, and that didn't work either.  What fun!  But during a search on the web, I found a statement that Windows XP did not include kodakimg.exe, so I found that and downloaded it, and I'm fixed.
