Lates Windows 11 Update KB5013943 - Critical Issues - Beware!

I have a brand new XPS 15 9510 and XPS 8950 both were bricked yesterday by the latest MS critical update KB5013943. I have no idea why MS would release such a buggy update. Had to spend 6 hours recovering both machines back to a usable state. I've put future updates on hold for 2 weeks in the hope MS will pull this update and debug it before issuing a new one. Beware download at your peril. Does DELL have any involvement in testing updates to ensure compatibility with their equipment and builds? I thought we were through all this sort of nonsense from MS after the various catastrophes in the past - obviously lessons not learnt yet!

philjw49 states that both PCs are now working. KB5013943 was no longer present in the downloadable updates.

@philjw49 is spot on and this web page has more information. And just a bit more information that is interesting. It seems that MS is actually releasing Windows 11 updates that turn back the clock on recent updates. Some users have been having problems such as mentioned in the above post so MS has reverted back to earlier builds to correct said problems. More on that in this video.

Hi, experiencing lots of issues since recently updating too. Especially with file explorer lagging/crashing and reboots with 'wouldnt load correctly' blue screen errors. Is this similar to your issues?

Can I ask what you did to get it back to a usable state? It's driving me up the wall haha.

Hi, You should be able to uninstall the Windows updates or from Advanced Start-up select one of the recovery options. If you have a restore point you may be able to roll back using the System Properties / System Protection / System Recovery route. For my PC I had to recover an Image using Macrium to get back to usable OS.

Hi, I have the same issue of @sunnyraini  on my Dell Inspiron 14 5410.

I tried rolling back to a restore point from January using Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery but the problem remained. Do you have any ideas how to solve this? @philjw49  Thanks!

Try uninstalling the latest updates - Windows Updates > Update History > Related Settings > Uninstall updates.

You can look through the description of the update at the link below.  Maybe something would peak your interest.  I have heard the .Net situation is involved in some of the problems so doing as it suggests for that may help.  And as in the link @JOcean gives it may depend on what you have running on your system.

@philjw49 It would be helpful to the group for you to explain exactly how your systems were bricked.  There have been problems with getting into Safe Mode which were being caused, I believe, by the update prior to this one.  Even now, if I go into Safe Mode with my desktop system, I see strange behavior, like a mouse not working, when I get back into the normal install.

Rumors are already starting about the release of 22H2 which may be sooner than expected.

I agree getting a BSOD without any info or dump files can be a problem, unless you may have had problems in the past with some device on your system.  The first thing I do is reduce the devices involved as much as possible.

Another thing that got me on the system I had, was the Dell repair software would kick in before the Windows Recovery scenario.  So, I used the Bios settings to turn it off so I could get into the Windows Recovery.  Your system may not allow that.

I also like to leave the Task Manger on with performance tab showing so I can see what might be happening.  It helps when I see a long delay and don't know why.  I did have to get rid of all my HDDs since windows was spending all of its time running those at 100%.

There were usually .Net updates along with the recent Windows updates but folks don't notice those.  Resetting the .Net 3.5 feature did help in some areas.

When it comes to multiple displays, I have seen a lot of comments about changes being made to the display configurations in the Insider Program.  There have been several changes in the last few months, as far as what will or won't show on a secondary display.

Hopefully, there have been enough problems with good info being provided, that Microsoft and any other effected developer can repair those problems quickly.

@Saltgrass for my Laptop I kept getting the Blue Screen of Death ....."something went wrong - we are collecting data...." so would not boot. For my PC it was a little different in that the dreaded KB5013943 failed to install correctly - showed as an error in the Windows Update screen so on attempting to reboot it hung on "window is updating" screen - for  longer than is acceptable, so hard power off to get out of that and eventually got into the rescue menus.

They dont test updates. For XPS and Alienware its better not to update as soon as an update is released
