How do I turn off auto clicking with mouse?

I have a new Inspiron 6000D. Using the touch pad if I leave the pointer on a link or anything clickable it opens, without clicking. How do I turn this off or disable it?

Thanks Ospray, but it's already set that way "Double click to open" this is what you mean isn't it?

Turn off single click. Open Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, in the General tab, select Double-click to open an item (single click to select).

As a trouble shooting method, try using an external mouse and see if the same thing happens.  Sometime the touchpads are very sensitive to gentile touches. When that happens the pad respond with a click or double click as the finger raises off of the pad. 
 
Contact me directly if you want to discuss how to fix the touch pad.  I do not know off the top of my head how to, so I will have to do some research. (I try to never use a touch pad.)

The I6000 has a way to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad. It's accessible from the icon on the right side of Taskbar, or you can go to Control Panel, Hardware, Mouse. There you can make the adjustments and test them. I agree--the touchpad is very sensitive and I've added a mouse. You might want to read the posts in the Inspiron General Hardware forum.

I will try an external mouse when I get home and see if I still have the problem. I also use an external mouse on my other one when I can but some places I actually have my notebook in my lap doing work.

Just to be clear here. I do not have to have my finger on the mouse pad for an item to open. That's the way I noticed it happening. I was reading and a page opened where the mouse pointer was.

I'm with Mary G. I carry a mouse around in my laptop case so I don't have to bother with the touch pad.

That's happened to me, too. I swear all I did was look at the touchpad!:smileywink:

I have seen the cursor follow my finger when it was more than one inch above the touch-pad. The pad may respond to static electricity or capacitance.

Is there some way to turn the touch pad off entirely? All I see is the external mouse in the control panel and the right side of the taskbar.
