vxrail internal vcenter with multiple cluster

Hi there,

As the new version 7.0.130 allows multiple VxRail clusters with the internal/embedded vCenter. I wonder if we can decommission the original cluster after adding the 2nd (new) vxrail cluster into the vcenter?

Also regarding LCM (after the original cluster is removed), how does the 2nd cluster (vxrail mgr) handle the vcenter upgrade?

Appreciated any insights...

thanks,

Hi,

Thanks for your question about Vxrail. You can check solve and look at the migration procedures. https://dell.to/3RxS5b6 However I don’t think removing the old cluster was designed to be done in this way.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi Josh,

I guess you are referring embedded to external vCenter migration. However, the idea is to keep the embedded vCenter and run it on the new (2nd) vxrail cluster.

Here is the scenario;

  • 1st VxRail cluster with embedded vCenter and upgraded to the latest 7.x version (hybrid or all-flash-ssd)
  • New -2nd VxRail cluster (all-flash -nvme) will be added into the existing embedded vCenter (installed with 1st cluster)
  • vCenter storage vmotion to the 2nd cluster -so keeping embedded vCenter as it is...

From this point on; I think 1st cluster can be removed from the vCenter without any issue. Some additional cleanup processes may require on vcenter related to the 1st vxrail manager!!

Here are the questions;

  1. Does the 2nd cluster see the vCenter as embedded or external?
  2. If it recognizes as embedded then LCM process updates the vcenter as well, am I right?

Thanks

I haven’t been able to find any documentation on it, but from what I can tell additional clusters treat it is as external and not internal.

Hi Josh,

Is this something you can confirm internally? Technically, vxrail manager is just a plugin for vCenter. This means some process inside the vxrail manager defines if vCenter is external or internal/embedded...

Thanks,

Can you private message me a service tag? I can ask, but it won’t be a supported configuration and if it breaks something in the future you may have to redeploy the cluster.
