Migration of VMs in a VxRail Cluster

Hello,

Currently, a client deployed a vxrail 7.0 cluster with four nodes, the vcenter version is still 7.0.

The client also has a 6.7 vCenter with ESXi 6.5 nodes in their infrastructure, where they have all their VMs running.

They want to migrate some VMs from their vCenter 6.7 to the new vCenter 7.0 which belongs to the VxRail cluster.

The storage you currently have is a Unity.

If you carry out this activity, what would be the best option to migrate VMs to the new Vxrail cluster?

Should I upgrade vCenter and ESxi nodes to 7.0, to take advantage of the vMotion across vCenter functionality?

configure ennhaced link mode between vCenter 6.7 and 7.0?

I listen to suggestions.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thanks for your question. You may want to call phone support since there is a lot of different things going on. However you can follow the solve procedures for upgrading. https://dell.to/3Yrwnct This article may also help. https://dell.to/3DHx1uo

I never got a great answer to this question. I was assured we could vMotion from vCenter cluster to a VxRail cluster during the planning phase. After install I found that vMotion only worked with VxRail clusters. We ended stopping a VM capture a full backup with Veeam then restore to the VxRail cluster. Then update hardware and tools for the VM and remove the snapshot from the hardware update. YMMV I would contact support first.

Hello,

We recently had to replace an older VxRail with a new one. Our old VxRail ws on vCenter 6.7. We could not do live migrations (cross vcenter migrations) due to the version. We had to power down the VMs and use the version 7  vcenter to vmotion (cross vcenter vmotion).
We also had vSphere Replication setup to replicate from old Vxrail to the new location. This was considerably faster.

Maybe this might be an option.

Thank you.
