IPv6 Multicast is mandatory or not in new versions?

Hello,

I have an inquiry about IPv6 Multicast in deploying VxRail Cluster, As now there is an option for manual discovery between nodes by assign static IPv4 for each node and choose manual discovery in Deployment Wizard, so in that case will there be no need for enable ipv6 multicast on ToR Switches or it stills a mandatory for Deploying VxRail Cluster.

As the customer has Switch without supporting IPv6 Multicast. and need to proceed with deploying cluster of 3 nodes using this switch.

please advice if enabling ipv6 multicast on Discovery (Private Management_3939) VLAN still mandatory or not?

Hi,

Thanks for your question about ipv6. There has not been in a change in the requirements that I have been able to find. It may work if you don’t use it but if you run into any issues you will want to use a switch that can.

Manual discovery method is intended for removing multicast requirement for Auto Discovery.

So, it is not needed to prepare switches for ipv6 multicasting.

We had a similar experience deploying our VxRail cluster, with IPv4 manual discovery not working correctly. We had to turn on IPv6 on the ESXi Hosts so that we could auto discover the Hosts, even though we run a strictly IPv4 network. Go figure.

A factory-reset node has 2 management vmk port.
One is vmk0 and the other is vmk2.
If you want to use Manual discovery by setting IPv4 address, it is vmk2 that you have to configure.
Are you sure that you had configured an IP on vmk2?
