Thin capability on Distributed Device (VPLEX 6 , XtremIO 6)

Hello,
My customer wants to create  2 thin LUNs on XtremIO and present them through a distributed volume on the VPLEX metrocluster to the VMware firm.

should I enable the thin option on the virtual volume on VPLEX ?

If yes, I have already read that Distributed-devices and remote devices are not thin-capable.
Local and distributed mirrors are not thin-capable, for Xio 4 and Vplex 5.5

Is this statement is already true with the current version below ?
XtremIO code release: 6.2
VPLEX Product Version : 6.1

Could you advise please, what are the best parctices to set a thin lun configuration with distributed devices?

Hi,

This question is documented in the vplex admin guide of vplex 6.1 in the Creating thin-enabled virtual volumes section :

- storage array must be supported by vplex (emc xtremio is)

- storage volume display thin properties

- Extents and devices fully encompass the thin-capable storage volumes

- All the mirrors are created from the same storage-array family that VPLEXsupports (For a RAID-1 configuration). The value corresponding to the storage-array-family property must not be mixed, other or -

[...]

In my case we use full thin chain from backend (emc unity) to vplex and it works very well. Since vmfs 6, scsi unmap command are send to vplex then to backend and space removed from vmware is also removed from backend.
