NetApp to Dell EMC Migrations

Dear Experts,

I support Vodafone Cloud & Hosting, who would like to ingest/migrate customer data from NetApp FAS to their standard Dell EMC Unity / VMAX infrastructure.  The simple support matrix details NetApp FAS systems, with 8.x OS. However, I believe VPLEX is Block only?  If the NetApps are configured as Filers, do we still have a migration option please?

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

To provide a little more context:

The NetAPP filer can present block storage over FC.

Any Block LUN presented from the NetAPP can be encapsulated by VPLEX and migrated to the Unity array

Related collateral:

  • VPLEX Data Mobility and Migration: Implementing Planning and Best Practices
  • Support for the NetApp array is documented in the VPLEX simple support matrix.
  • Connectivity between VPLEX and NetApp is outlined in VPLEX SAN connectivity.  NetApp should be configured as an ALUA array.
  • Encapsulation procedure is documented in SolVe, but does not cover NetApp specifically.
  • The most common issue with this encapsulation is documented in article number 000461229. (VPLEX: Attempting to encapsulate NetApp storage by VPLEX fails with an error)
  • Data Mobility (Data Migration) is covered in the VPLEX Product Guide.

Storage provisioning tasks on the NetApp are not documented by Dell-EMC.

Hello Andy,

Our Champions advise that it's a file migration that you can use DataDobi/EMCopy/RoboCopy/Rsync, etc. on.  There is no array based migration method though if that is what you are looking for. On VMAX btw.  You will need a NAS head attached to it as the VMAX has no file capabilities native to it.  eNAS works as that is a NAS head attached to a VMAX.   On the UNITY side it has to also be using the file capabilities.. not the block capabilities.  This has nothing to do with VPLEX.

Don't download Dell Migrate. I still have to download all my apps. What was my PC moving for 16 hours?
