Data migration through VPLEX

I would like to know if it is possible to migrate data from one VNX to another both connected to VPLEX. Can VPLEX help in any way to transfer data from VNX 1 to VNX 2? Or is it better to just use MirrorView and replicate data between the two VNXes.

Your advice is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Karim

Which VPLEX version are you planning on using

Is this a VPLEX Local or VPLEX Metro solution ?

As you are planning true active active across both DC you will need VPLEX METRO i.e. VPLEX on SITE A and a VPLEX on SITE B with either Fibre or 10GB IP connectivity

For VPLEX metro latency must be less than 5 Milliseconds so with your distance you will be within this requirement

Once you have configured your vplex metro and configured an existing  LUN as a local device you can then change this to a distributed device by adding a mirror. This will copy date from Site a To Site B

Hi Karim,

In short Yes VPLEX can help migrate from current VNX to new VNX

I have a question though

Are you planning to keep VPLEX in your environment once the migration is complete?

If you are planing to keep VPLEX in your environment long term then VPLEX is a great tool for migrations

Once both VNX are connected to VPLEX then a create a device mobility job to move from old VNX to new VNX

Once the task is complete -- remember to click on complete to break the mirror from the old VNX to the new VNX

Once the migration is complete the old VNX can be removed very easily

The hosts will be unaware that the storage has changed. Thats working on the presumption that the hosts are connected through VPLEX

Very informative... Thanks.

The two VNXes are in two DCs less than 10Kms apart and we are trying to setup active-active DCs. The second site has been built recently and initial task would be to mirror whatever data is available in the first VNX to the new VNX. There are critical apps running on the old VNX and downtime needs to be minimized to the max.

I was wondering if I can just zone the VNXes to the VPLEX and migrate the data. Hosts will be zoned to the FE ports too.

What do you think?

Thank you.

Yes, we are using VPLEX Metro and all the requirements are met.

Your last paragraph answer my question.

Thank you very much. Will mark it as answered.
